Leeds United dig made as Sheffield United told why they are in ‘driving seat’ for Championship title

The battle for Championship promotion is heating up, with Sheffield United and Leeds United currently leading the race.

Sheffield United have had a superb 2024/25 season so far, despite Chris Wilder’s men being hit with a points deduction at the beginning of the campaign.

The Blades hammered Coventry City 3-1 last time out, even though Frank Lampard’s team are in play-off contention.

Over the same weekend, Leeds United drew with Swansea City, with questions now being asked of the Whites following back-to-back stalemates against ‘weaker’ teams.

Said results saw Sheffield United climb to the summit of the Championship, with two points separating the top-three clubs.

Sheffield United tipped to win Championship title ahead of Leeds United

Claims Leeds are falling apart again are beginning to mount, and at this stage, it’s hard to argue.

It was around this time last year when the Yorkshire outfit fell away in the automatic promotion race before going on to lose in the play-offs to Southampton.

Now, speaking on the Second Tier podcast this week, James Justin and Ryan Dilks have been discussing Sheffield United and how they are ‘in the driving seat’ to win the Championship.

Dilks asked: “With Leeds failing to win, you look at the table now. It’s all looking very good for Chris Wilder’s men, isn’t it?”

To which Justin responded: “Well the fact that he’s averaging 2.1 eight points per game right now is promotion-winning form for starters.

“So that’s a very healthy, healthy aspect, but yeah, it’s gunning for the title isn’t it? We do have to emphasise the point that he’s won more points than Daniel Farke has this season.”

Dilks then agreed while mentioning how Sheffield United are coping with the pressure a lot better than Leeds: “I completely agree with you on that one Justin, that’s the one thing we will agree with because you have to say they’re very much in the driving seat now.

“Even though Leeds do have a much kinder set of fixtures remaining than them, Sheffield United are just motoring along whoever they are playing against and, more importantly, are coping with the pressure a lot better.”

He added: “We have got to remember Sheffield United haven’t been great at Bramall Lane recently, a few poor results, but you wouldn’t have guessed that at all watching this game.

“So they’ll be hoping that’s been amended now because eight wins in nine away from home is exceptional.

“Of course, still got to play Burnley away, but you look at their remaining games, it’s hard to identify too many games which will cause them serious problems.

“So yeah Sheffield United, in the driving seat, got the seat belt on and everything.”

Championship table predicted by supercomputer

As well as being backed by pundits to clinch top spot, Opta’s predicted Championship table has the Blades down to take first.

In some good news for Leeds, though, they are still expected to finish second, with Burnley ending up third.

But with so much football still to play and Farke’s men wobbling, fans of the Peacocks shouldn’t get too excited just yet.
