Leicester City parted ways with head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy this week, and EFL Analysis can confirm who the coach on their radar alongside the Sheffield Wednesday boss is.
After weeks of speculation following the Foxes’ relegation from the top flight, Leicester City parted ways with head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy this week.
Van Nistelrooy’s parting Leicester statement showed no signs of remorse towards the Foxes hierarchy, despite the delay in officially deciding to cut ties with the Dutchman.
Leicester’s delay over van Nistelrooy’s exit was slammed by journalist Henry Winter for taking so long, after van Nistelrooy was expected to leave Leicester for several weeks.
With the search for his successor in full swing, EFL Analysis can confirm the coach alongside Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl on Leicester’s radar.

England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley mooted with Leicester City job
EFL Analysis revealed earlier in June that current Owls boss Rohl is the frontrunner for Leicester, and that decision would prove to be a popular one among the Foxes faithful, with many Leicester fans wanting Rohl to succeed van Nistelrooy.
The main stumbling block regarding Leicester’s acquisition has been Rohl’s £5m Sheffield Wednesday release clause.
However, in a major boost for Leicester’s Rohl pursuit, it has emerged that it would now cost Leicester around £1m to get Rohl, if he is the option they choose to be their new manager, after his compensation package for another club to employ him was decreased.
Despite Rohl remaining as the favourite to succeed van Nistelrooy at Leicester, EFL Analysis can confirm, via information from our Chief Football correspondent, Graeme Bailey, that England Under-21s manager “Lee Carsley is on Leicester’s radar”.
Bailey added: “Lee Carsley’s stock is very high, his work with England is hugely impressive.
“He is being linked with a host of jobs, and it is no shock that Leicester might be keen – given he is based around St George’s Park – it could also be a very good fit.
“Is Carsley ready to move into the club game? It’s one to keep an eye on.”
We revealed in April that Leicester were considering Carsley, and although it could’ve been related to England Under-21 duty, Carsley was spotted at Leicester vs Southampton in May.
Of the three new managers assessed by Leicester whom the Foxes have done their due diligence amid van Nistelrooy’s exit, Carsley has been a consistent presence in the discussions of Leicester’s future manager.
When comparing Carsley’s record against Rohl’s, both head coaches are equally impressive in their own rights.

Danny Rohl’s managerial record compared to Lee Carsley’s
The major difference between Leicester’s targets, Rohl and Carsley, is that the Englishman has never been the full-time senior manager of a club in the EFL.
Carsley has had spells as caretaker manager of Coventry City, Brentford, and Birmingham City, but the Leicester job would represent his first full campaign as a Championship head coach.
The England Under-21s boss has earned acclaim for his exploits with the Young Lions, after masterminding their victory in the Under-21 European Championships against Spain in 2023.
Carsley was then appointed interim head coach of England after former Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate’s departure, in a spell during which England won five of his six games in his temporary charge.
This evening (June 28), Carsley’s England Under-21s take on Germany’s youngsters in the European Championship final.
| Statistic | Danny Rohl | Lee Carsley |
| Games in charge | 89 | 96 |
| Wins | 34 | 67 |
| Draws | 19 | 12 |
| Losses | 36 | 17 |
| Win rate | 38% | 70% |
| Points per game | 1.36 | 2.22 |
Rohl, however, has two seasons of Championship experience under his belt at Sheffield Wednesday.
The highly-rated head coach steered the Owls to safety in 2023/24 during his first season in charge, and stabilised the club to a mid-table finish last term.
Despite persistent links to roles in his native Germany this summer, Rohl is open to staying in England, and that call could be Leicester’s gain heading into the 2025/26 Championship campaign.
