As expected for several weeks, Leicester City and head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed to part ways ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.
Ruud van Nistelrooy oversaw Leicester City’s relegation to the Championship during the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, and their post-season life has been just as turbulent.
Regarding the playing squad, transfer vultures have circled over the King Power Stadium, with Foxes captain Conor Coady set to join Rangers and Bayer Leverkusen targeting Bilal El Khannouss.
In the dugout, change is also coming after weeks of speculation that van Nistelrooy was expected to leave Leicester, the decision has finally been made publicly official by the Foxes.

Ruud van Nistelrooy shares thoughts as boss leaves Leicester City in mutual agreement
Despite the fact that some Leicester fans were open to van Nistelrooy staying as head coach despite the relegation, the axe fell on the Dutchman’s 27-game stint as Foxes head coach.
Across his tenure since joining in November, Leicester won five, drew three, and lost 19 games to condemn the Foxes to a place in the 2025/26 Championship campaign.
As the summer transfer window continues, the Foxes have finally cut the cord with van Nistelrooy, and the Manchester United legend has shared a parting message to Leicester.
Van Nistelrooy told Leicester’s website: “I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the Club.

“And, to thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the Club well for the future.”
The Leicester officials added: “Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the Club. From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims.
“Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the Football Club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future.”
With the Leicester squad’s pre-season preparations planned to start on Monday, June 30, attention now quickly turns to which head coach will be appointed as van Nistelrooy’s successor.

Managers in contention to replace Ruud Van Nistelrooy at Leicester City
Leicester have been linked with several head coaches regarding van Nistelrooy’s replacement, and the next appointment will need to be perfect given the calibre of teams in next season’s second tier that have set it up to be the best Championship season to date.
Former Burnley and Everton boss Sean Dyche has been linked with the Leicester job, given that the Englishman is very close to Leicester City’s director of football, Jon Rudkin.
However, some sections of the Leicester hierarchy are facing push back about appointing Dyche, which could end up ruling him out of the running to succeed van Nistelrooy.
Aside from Dyche, current Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has been mooted for Leicester, but a move for the German could be costly for the Foxes given Rohl’s £5m Owls release clause.
Whether it’s the experience and battle-worn Dyche, the young and exciting Rohl, or another head coach in contention to become van Nistelrooy’s replacement, the decision will be imperative for the Leicester hierarchy.
