The excitement ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season is building as the fixtures were released on Thursday.

League One title winners Birmingham City open up the Championship campaign with a clash against relegated Ipswich Town on Friday, August 8th.

Elsewhere, a mouth-watering clash takes centre stage at St Mary’s on the opening weekend as Southampton host newly-promoted Wrexham on Saturday, August 9th.

After being promoted alongside Birmingham and Wrexham through the play-offs, Charlton Athletic drew a difficult beginning to life back in the second tier as the Addicks play the likes of Bristol City, Leicester City and Sheffield United in three of their first six.

But whilst Charlton could struggle to pick up points early doors, another side will fancy their chances of getting some wins on the board during August and September.

Leicester City’s favourable start to the 2025/26 Championship season

Leicester are one of the favourites for promotion after being relegated from the Premier League in 2024/25.

Although the future of Ruud van Nistelrooy is hanging in the balance and the Foxes could face a points deduction, they still boast one of the best squads in the division.

So, whoever takes charge of Leicester in 2025/26 will be hoping to make a solid start to the campaign as they aim to set a strong pace at the top.

When the Championship fixtures were released on Thursday, supporters would have been pleased to see some opportunities to win points early on.

Leicester City’s first six fixtures of the 2025/26 Championship campaign

Leicester kick off their promotion push with a home clash against Sheffield Wednesday, who are going through turmoil under Dejphon Chansiri.

The Foxes then head to Preston North End, a side that finished one point above the relegation zone last term, before travelling to newly promoted Charlton.

A home clash against Birmingham will be tough as they’re expected to spend big this summer, but Oxford United could struggle next season.

Leicester complete their first six fixtures with a derby clash against Coventry City, a team they’ve not lost against in seven of their last eight meetings.

Leicester City’s opening day record

Some sides suffer a hangover after being relegated from the Premier League, but the Foxes will be hopeful that they can dispel that trend and make a strong start.

Leicester City’s opening day record last five seasons
2024/25 – Leicester City 1-1 Tottenham
2023/24 – Leicester City 2-1 Coventry City
2022/23 – Leicester City 2-2 Brentford
2021/22 – Leicester City 1-0 Wolves
2020/21 – West Brom 0-3 Leicester City

Interestingly, Leicester are unbeaten in each of their last opening day fixtures across the previous five campaigns, including wins over Coventry, Wolves and West Brom.

It’s also the fifth time in a row their opening fixture is at home, which they hope will be a good omen come playing Sheffield Wednesday in August.
