‘No pressure’ – Stockport County fans welcome new signing to Edgeley Park as the Hatters break their record fee

Stockport County are pursuing an automatic promotion spot in 2025/26 after a bitterly disappointing end to last season.

The Hatters were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Leyton Orient in League One back in May, and Dave Challinor will be looking for a reaction once August comes around.

With Birmingham City and Wrexham promoted, the race for the top two does look a little bit more open, although Huddersfield Town will fancy themselves as favourites.

Therefore it is imperative that Stockport bring in quality players this summer and they looked to have done so already as Malik Mothersille makes his way to Edgeley Park from Peterborough United.

The Greater Manchester outfit announced the signing of the forward on Wednesday and the 21-year-old is the club’s record signing.

After scoring 12 goals and picking up nine assists in 45 League One games last season, the future is bright for Mothersille and supporters took to social media to welcome him to the club.

Another Stockport fan said: “Looks like a decent signing. Need a few more yet though but it’s a step in the right direction. Welcome to County.”

While a third wrote: “Club record fee, no pressure. Welcome to Edgeley Park.”

“Fantastic signing, very skilful and can beat his man. He also plays a few positions. Challinor’s the perfect manager to develop this lad. Jack Diamond, Jayden Fevrier, and now Malik is some real pace up top,” a fifth Hatters supporter put.

As one more wrote: “Cheaper than Tanto [Isaac Olaofe] and had more goals/assists.”

There will be high expectations of Malik Mothersille

It’s been a tough summer so far for Peterborough. Hector Kyprianou joined Watford in the first weeks after the season ended, while Kwame Poku is now a QPR player.

On his day, Mothersille has plenty of quality and he offers Stockport an excellent option going forward in the next few years. However, there will be some fears over inconsistency and Dave Challinor will have his work cut out to get on top of this.

With Isaac Olaofe making the switch to Charlton Athletic for a fee that Alan Nixon reported to be £1.5m, the Hatters have found an excellent replacement but only time will tell if he is the man to take the club to promotion glory.
