Phil Parkinson reveals Wrexham’s transfer policy after promotion, supporters should expect ‘better’ this summer

Wrexham head into the 2025/26 campaign in a different division once again, as their Hollywood story reaches the Championship.

Phil Parkinson has been in charge of three successive promotions at the Racecourse Ground, with the Red Dragons going all the way from the National League to the second tier in just three years and excitement is brewing once again in North Wales.

However, this test is set to be the hardest of any for the club in the last few seasons, as they face two former Premier League champions, as well as established Championship clubs such as Coventry City, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United.

New faces are needed at Wrexham quickly, with Danny Ings already a target. However, after avoiding the loan market in the past, Parkinson may just delve into it this summer.

Phil Parkinson reveals that Wrexham will review the loan market in the transfer window

With the EFL transfer window just days away from opening, the Red Dragons have plenty of business to do to ensure that they are able to compete in the second tier.

The new Championship season will be one to watch, and the introduction of Wrexham into the division does make it more exciting. But it is clear to see that work is needed on this current squad to ensure that they are not left behind by their rivals.

To help with this, Parkinson has revealed that the club will look at using loan players. He said (via: The Athletic): “The loan market is something we are looking at. It’s all about touching base with the Premier League loans managers, making sure we have an understanding of who could become available.

“A lot of those players (whose loan spells for 2024-25 have now ended) will probably go back and start pre-season with their clubs because managers like numbers around them for pre-season games. We can probably attract a better calibre of player than we’d have been able to do in the past.”

Phil Parkinson has to lower the age of his squad

With the likes of Ollie Palmer, Paul Mullin and Jack Marriott all options in the forward line, it is clear to see that Wrexham have a squad that is too old.

They have carried over players all the way from their days in non-league, and they may find it tough with the step-up to the Championship as the quality increases ten-fold from League One.

Bringing in young, promising players from the Premier League could be an excellent way for Parkinson to find the quick, cheap fixes that he needs to fill the squad. But with competition from the likes of Birmingham City, who had a record-breaking season in the third tier, they will have to move at pace to get the players in that they need.
