Birmingham City and Wrexham battle for out of contract Premier League striker who’s ‘more appealing’ than Jamie Vardy

Birmingham City are preparing for life back in the Championship following promotion from League One in the 2024/25 campaign, and the second tier will be wary of their strength ahead of next season.

It was a record-breaking year for Blues, and while Wrexham tried their best to compete against Chris Davies’ side, they were forced to settle for second place by a distance. However, Phil Parkinson will not care, with the Red Dragons winning three successive promotions.

However, they may now be locked in another battle, with new signings needed for both clubs to help them compete in the Championship next season but they are not alone in this fight.

Goal scorers will be needed, and with Wrexham potentially losing Paul Mullin, they will want an experienced head to help lead the line while Birmingham City will want more big names in their squad.

Birmingham City and Wrexham are set to battle it out for Danny Ings, Burnley could also be an option

Danny Ings’ time at West Ham United is coming to an end this summer, and he is in the hunt for a new club after two-and-a-half years as a Hammer.

There are plenty of options for the 32-year-old, and Graeme Bailey has told EFL Analysis exclusively that Birmingham and Wrexham are potential destinations for Ings.

He said: “There are a lot of options out there. I wouldn’t necessarily rule Burnley out of the equation. Again, we know he’s obviously had time there and did well. I think he’s another one [like Jamie Vardy] who is on the cusp; does he go to a Premier League club or maybe a top of the Championship club?

“Again, I wouldn’t rule him out of the Birmingham and Wrexham conversations at all. I think there are a lot of options out there for Danny Ings and he’s just weighing them up. Again, a bit like Vardy, I think he’d rather be in the Premier League, but he may have to drop down.”

Bailey concluded: “I think he’s probably got a little bit more interest than Vardy, to be honest, from what I’m hearing. He’s younger, more versatile, has more experience at different clubs and in different styles and systems. I think he’s seen as a more appealing option.”

Danny Ings could be a more viable option than Jamie Vardy for Championship sides

As revealed by The Independent’s Miguel Delaney, Crystal Palace are showing an interest in Jamie Vardy, and with the Eagles guaranteed to be playing in the Europa League next season, this could be extremely enticing for the Leicester City legend.

This may make it tough for a Championship side to bring the retired England striker to the second tier, and instead Ings could be the perfect player to do so instead – with his years of experience a huge pull.

He has not performed at a Premier League level for a few seasons now, and dropping back into the EFL may just be the perfect way for him to find form in front of goal once again.

Ings would be a huge coup for either Birmingham or Wrexham, although the appeal of returning to Burnley could put them into pole position.
