Sheffield United board of directors issue statement as Chris Wilder makes Bramall Lane return

It’s official, Chris Wilder is back at Sheffield United.

Just under three months ago, the 57-year-old was sacked by the Blades following a dramatic play-off final defeat to Sunderland, with Ruben Selles replacing him at Bramall Lane.

However, the Spaniard struggled during his short time in S2, and after six defeats from six games in all competitions, the time came on Sunday afternoon to relieve the former Hull City boss of his duties in South Yorkshire.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of winners and losers from the return of Wilder, and COH Sports have effectively reversed the decision they made in June. Now, they have spoken for the first time on the re-appointment of a Sheffield United hero.

COH Sports explain the reasoning behind Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United return

After 305 games, 140 wins, 57 draws and 108 defeats, Wilder returns to a club that he has been intrinsically linked with for a number of decades, let alone years.

Following the appointment, the board of directors at Sheffield United issued a statement behind the decision to bring the head coach back to the club, as well as explaining in more detail why Selles was sacked.

It reads (via: sufc.co.uk): “Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion. While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.

“Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season.

“We would like to thank Rubén Sellés for his hard work and professionalism during his time at the club. Responsibility for recent results lies with us as owners, and we remain fully committed to supporting the team and pursuing promotion.”

Chris Wilder’s first four fixtures after Blades reunion

This is Wilder’s third stint in charge of Sheffield United, but it has perhaps come at the most pressing time with the club rooted to the bottom of the Championship table with zero points after five games.

After taking training on Monday, Charlton Athletic await the Blades at Bramall Lane on the former Middlesbrough manager’s comeback tour, before he makes the visit to a club he knows very well in the form of Oxford United a week later.

Will Still, who is facing pressure from Southampton supporters, will then be the next visitor to Sheffield United before a Yorkshire derby away to Hull City welcomes in the next international break.

There is no doubt that there are some winnable games in this run, and three points against the Addicks on Saturday will help ease some of the pressure on the team.
