Sheffield United beat Stoke City on Friday evening in a game marred by controversy after Blades forward Rhian Brewster was on the receiving end of two tackles that fans were left furious over.
Sheffield United beat Stoke City 2-0 on Friday evening, with goals from Sam McCallum and substitute Andre Brooks enough to secure three points for the Blades.
Chris Wilder’s side came into the clash with automatic promotion out of reach following their 2-1 defeat at Burnley which cemented their third-placed finish in the Championship table.
Meanwhile, Mark Robins admitted Stoke were still in the relegation battle, despite the Potters being some distance away from the relegation mini-league.
Following the win, Sheffield United fans took to social media to share their frustrations over the officiating, after two “shocking” tackles left Rhian Brewster lucky to emerge unscathed.

Sheffield United fans slam tackles on Rhian Brewster in win vs Stoke City
Wilder will have been happy with the EFL call ahead of the Stoke clash, with Wilder renowned for being on the wrong side of a match official run-in, but has yet to have one with Friday’s referee Jarred Gillett.
However, it was Gillett who caused the meltdown amongst Blades fans after the game, with two full-blooded tackles on Brewster not deemed as red card worthy.
The first came just shy of the hour-mark, when Ben Wilmot scythed Brewster down before moments later Wouter Burger ran over the ball and stamped on the forward’s shin.
One Sheffield United fan posted on social media: “Shocking tackles another useless ref”.
Another argued: “That Stoke team tonight are the dirtiest one that we have played for a while. The ref was also really weak. A shocking combination.”, as another added: “We don’t want it but VAR is needed surely”.
A fellow Blades fan said: “Both are red cards. Brewster so lucky not to be badly injured. Awful ref, been poor all night. So easily could have lost control.”
One fan posted: “Both should have been red cards. Disgraceful challenges”, as another agreed: Both straight reds. Awful tackles, awful officiating”.
Particularly concerned with Stoke’s number six, one Blades fan argued: “Burger could have been sent off at least 3 times.”
Also, Stoke City fans were furious with Tyrese Campbell after they lamented his “classless” incident.
Chris Basham thought it was a “feisty environment”, and the former Blades star was correct in his assessment, with 16 fouls committed by Stoke and 11 by visiting Sheffield United.

How do Stoke City and Sheffield United look going into final day
Following Friday night’s affair, Stoke and Sheffield United have only one game to go of their regular campaigns, and both are looking over their shoulders at opposite ends of the table.
Robins’ side travel to Derby County next Saturday and relegation could be made mathematically out of the question following this weekend’s round of fixtures.
The Blades, however, have made third place their own and are chasing down two records in their final day clash against Blackburn Rovers. Wilder has talked up the importance of winning culture, and that will be imperative to install given the Blades’ worrying play-offs record ahead of next month’s season-defining campaign.
