Sheffield United and Oxford faced off in a Championship meeting on Saturday afternoon, with a win a must for both sides.

Oxford United kicked off the weekend sat just two points above the relegtion zone with seven Championship fixtures left to play.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, knew a victory would have opened the gap between themselves and Leeds United.

Leeds drew with Luton Town in one of the day’s early kick-offs despite the Hatters being in danger of going down.

It was the third-straight draw in for the Whites, whose defeat meant they moved out of the automatic promotion places for the first time in months.

But with Burnley winning against Coventry City on April 5, it was clear victory was a must for Chris Wilder and co.

However, the Blades fell behind after just 38 minutes, thanks to a goal from Siriki Dembele.

Sheff Utd were lackluster following Oxford’s goal, with a number of players greatly underperforming.

Now, after watching their side drop points against a team fighting relegation, Sheffield United fans have taken to social media to make their feeling clear, with a number suggesting they are back to their old selves.

One fan wrote: “Looks like it’s back to same old Utd, after that cracking performance against Coventry. Why can’t we play well for more than one game.”

A second added: “What a shocking first half performance that was gone back to the old ways thinking we just need to turn up and we win players need to work a lot harder and put some effort in and make runs off the ball we aren’t doing anything like that hopefully we do second half.”

“Back to the Sheff Utd we’ve watched for the majority of this season. Look nervous as —-. Sort it out United. Long way to go,” a third fan wrote.

Another stated: “Had a feeling we weren’t going to turn up today. Absolutely disgraceful first half, look dodgy with every ball into the box, can’t play simple passes. Don’t think any of them come away with any credit after that 45 minutes all poor.”

A fifth claimed: “This is an absolutely shocking result, bottled it.”

While a sixth mocked: ” ‘Alright, lads. We’re 2nd in the league and we’re playing a team just above the relegation zone. We win this and we go 4 points clear of third. We’ve just got to win’. (We’re going to lose 1-0).”

Sheffield United now know what to do to win promotion

It was a serious missed opportunity from Sheffield United, who should have put some much-needed breathing room between themselves and Leeds.

Instead, there are now just two points separating the top three, with the Yorkshire outfit dropping down to second in the table.

Leeds are back in action on Tuesday and Blades fans will be desperate for them to lose to play-off chasers, Middlesbrough.

As for Sheff Utd, if they want to guarantee a top-two place, they will need to ensure they return to form after being ‘back to same old’ against Oxford.

Should they not do so, a top-two spot could easily fade away, especially if they lose to Burnley later this month.
