Sheffield Wednesday lost fan-favourite assistant coach Chris Powell this summer after he departed alongside Danny Rohl.

Henrik Pedersen is at the helm for Sheffield Wednesday this season following the exit of Danny Rohl this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-1 to Leicester City in the opening weekend affair, but the Foxes defeat pales in comparison to the financial issues off the field for Sheffield Wednesday under owner Dejphon Chansiri.

An unfortunate casualty of the crisis for the Owls faithful was the departure of Rohl’s assistant coach, Chris Powell, this summer.

Powell was a universally loved character at Hillsborough, and the veteran coach has now revealed why Sheffield Wednesday was such a “special place”.

Chris Powell shares heartfelt Sheffield Wednesday comments

Powell left Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month alongside Rohl ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

After departing Hillsborough, Powell slammed Chansiri for his lack of communication at Sheffield Wednesday throughout the club’s crisis.

Powell was loved by Sheffield Wednesday fans during his Owls stint, and that feeling was mutual regarding the whole club from his perspective.

Speaking on Sam Allardyce’s No Tippy Tappy podcast, Powell said: “It’s just a club that grabbed me, it got me, you know, and people are brilliant.

“I really admire the spirit and what they are and what they’ve gone through and what they’re going through.

“I look back on it with real fondness because I bought into them a bit and I had a bit of a rapport with them and with the players, some good players there.

“Liam Palmer, Barry Bannan have been there a long time, a lot of the staff have been there.

“As you know, Sam, a lot of the staff don’t change, behind the scenes, the people that work in the kit department and work, you know, Danny’s PA, Debbie, they’ve been there for years, seen loads of managers and people…

“But they stay because they love the place, you know, it’s part of them, part of their families.

“So, you know, I’m looking forward to going back there, maybe with another team, but even if I don’t just go for a game, it’s a special place, but I hope they pull through, I’m sure they will.”

Sheffield Wednesday takeover could finally be on the horizon

Powell departed the Owls at the height of Sheffield Wednesday’s financial plight this summer to call time on his near two-year stint.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed this week that John Textor’s Sheffield Wednesday interest is genuine, and that he is intent on taking over an English club.

Textor’s plans for Sheffield Wednesday would put an end to the Chansiri saga and finally set the Owls back on a stable path.

With Pedersen facing a difficult task in his first season in charge at Sheffield Wednesday, given the off-field matters, the Dane would no doubt love to call on Powell’s EFL experience to guide him.
