Sheffield Wednesday have history on their side as 20-year record vs Stoke City hangs in the balance

You’d be hard pressed to find anyone to back Sheffield Wednesday to win any of their fixtures this season, but if history repeats itself against Stoke City tomorrow afternoon, they’ll come away with at least a point.

Ahead of the new season, with everything that has gone on at Hillsborough this summer, it’s not surprising that Sheffield Wednesday are tipped to finish rock bottom of the Championship table.

The Owls have a paper-thin squad, Henrik Pedersen can’t sign any new players at the moment, and the ongoing financial crisis could lead to even more punishments for Sheffield Wednesday down the line.

But, after a couple of positive performances this week, there is a glimmer of hope for Wednesday’s first home game of the season against Stoke City this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday are unbeaten at home vs Stoke City since 2005

As far as bogey teams go for Stoke, Sheffield Wednesday would be up there, at least when it comes to away days in S6.

Looking back through the history books, the past seven meetings between these two teams at Hillsborough have either ended in a Sheffield Wednesday win or a draw.

In fact, Stoke have not won a game at Hillsborough since way back in November 2005, when the Potters prevailed 2-0 in a Championship game.

Since then, there have been five draws and two home wins, including a 2-0 win for the Owls there last December. Goals from Josh Windass and Callum Paterson sealed the win that day, though both have now departed the club this summer.

Over the course of history, Wednesday have the slight edge, too, winning 40 games to Stoke’s 36, with 25 draws between them.

Predictions for Sheffield Wednesday vs Stoke City

It’s sure to be a feisty affair at Hillsborough this weekend, with Sheffield Wednesday fans set to protest the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri.

However, on the pitch, we’re expecting a close game. In our weekly Championship score predictions we backed a 1-1 draw, with the Owls crowd helping the players get over the line to pick up a point.

Elsewhere, Benjamin Bloom thinks Stoke will win, while Sam Parkin agreed with us and said a 1-1 draw is more likely.

After the performance last Sunday, many rival fans have changed their minds about Sheffield Wednesday, suggesting they could actually stay up despite all their off-field issues.
