Championship score predictions for gameweek 2 as Sheffield United bounce back and Millwall keep rolling

Add as preferred source on Google

The EFL is well and truly back now and after a thrilling first weekend we’re back with more Championship score predictions for gameweek two.

The opening weekend of the new Championship season saw Leicester City and Southampton record the wins they were widely expected to, but not in the manner most would have predicted.

Meanwhile, Charlton Athletic, Stoke City, Portsmouth, and Millwall all bagged impressive victories, and Bristol City delivered the biggest shock by battering Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

Now, EFL Analysis experts Jakob Barnes, Adam Elliott, and Callum Boyle are back to share their Championship score predictions for this weekend’s games. Will there be any more surprise results?

Championship score predictions: Gameweek 2

Wrexham vs West Brom

Wrexham have made clear what their blueprint is under Phil Parkinson after a valiant defeat to Southampton. However, at the Racecourse, they are a different beast. They’ll want to impose themselves here.

West Brom, meanwhile, will be looking to put their midweek cup disappointment behind them. That’s in spite of another promising display. A share of the spoils is on the cards here.

Adam’s score prediction: Wrexham 1-1 West Brom

Derby County vs Coventry City

Derby County could and should have got off to a much better start to the season but ended up getting a bit of a pasting from the Potters, while Coventry City will be frustrated to have been held to a 0-0 draw by Hull City.

Both teams have something to prove this weekend, then, and that should make for a game with a bit of bite. However, I do think the two teams will cancel each other out and come away from Pride Park still looking for their first league win of the season.

Jakob’s score prediction: Derby County 1-1 Coventry City

Portsmouth vs Norwich City

Both sides had contrasting starts to the weekend as Portsmouth beat Oxford and Norwich were beaten at home by Millwall. I think Portsmouth have the potential to upset the apple cart this year.

John Mousinho is a great coach and the Fratton Park atmosphere is always intimidating. Liam Manning’s sides tend to not start seasons well and finish strongly. I’m backing a home win here but panic stations don’t need to set in at Norwich.

Callum’s score prediction: Portsmouth 2-0 Norwich City

Preston North End vs Leicester City

Leicester City still have work to do before the window closes but the quality in the squad is simply too much to ignore. Preston North End aren’t a side many are expecting much from this season but they’ll be keen to make Deepdale a fortress. It’ll be a tight game but the quality at Marti Cifuentes’ disposal should tell eventually.

Adam’s score prediction: Preston North End 1-2 Leicester City

Swansea City vs Sheffield United

Of all the Championship score predictions we made last week, the hammering Sheffield United received at the hands of Bristol City was the biggest shock of them all. Still, Ruben Selles had the Blades playing some nice football if you don’t look at the scoreboard, and they’ll bounce back this weekend.

Swansea struggled against a really poor Middlesbrough side last weekend, and they’re going to keep struggling until they sign a decent striker. This will be a fairly comfortable one for the away team.

Watford vs QPR

Two sides with new managers finding their feet in the Championship. Watford were rightfully criticised for their sluggish display at Charlton and QPR feel like a bit of an unknown entity.

If new QPR signing Richard Kone is eligible to play in this game then that’ll be an extra boost. This feels like it has score draw written all over it, though, and these two sides will be very evenly matched.

Callum’s score prediction: Watford 1-1 QPR

Blackburn Rovers vs Birmingham City

A summer of uncertainty has been the story for Blackburn Rovers regarding their best players; the opposite is true for Birmingham City following promotion.

Both clubs are worlds apart in terms of the temperature and optimism levels at each. That should see Blues secure their first win of a huge season for Chris Davies.

Adam’s score prediction: Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Birmingham City

Sheffield Wednesday vs Stoke City

We went into last weekend expecting Sheffield Wednesday to get turned over by Leicester, but that was far from the case. In fact, the Owls put up such a brave fight that many have now given them a chance of staying up this season against the odds, and I reckon they’ll pick up their first point here.

Stoke were very impressive against Derby, and if any team is going to win this it will be Mark Robins’ men, but there’s just something about the Hillsborough crowd and the undying support Wednesday have that I fancy to carry them through in this one.

Jakob’s score prediction: Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Stoke City

Millwall vs Middlesbrough

I’ve been banging the drum about Millwall and I won’t stop, they’re the real deal. Alex Neil’s side put in a brilliant performance at Norwich and displayed all the attributes of a top side playing away from home.

Middlesbrough also won on the opening day but losing Rav van den Berg is a big blow. I don’t fancy many teams to come away from The Den with three points and Boro won’t be one of them.

Callum’s score prediction: Millwall 2-1 Middlesbrough

Bristol City vs Charlton Athletic

Two of the most impressive teams on opening day meet in Bristol for a test of how Nathan Jones’ side can handle the tests away from The ‘fortress’ Valley. Gerhard Struber’s side are already eyeing a play-off repeat this term and they’ll also need to make home comforts comfortable. Tight one but a home win.

Adam’s score prediction: Bristol City 2-1 Charlton Athletic

Ipswich Town vs Southampton

These are two teams who will no doubt be right up there come the end of the season. They’ve got such strong squads, that have suffered very little upheaval over the summer, and that consistency will be crucial to their promotion hopes.

Neither of them had things their own way last weekend, though, with newly promoted teams putting them to the test. Of the two, I’ll back home advantage and the arrival of Chuba Akpom to get Ipswich Town over the line this weekend.

Jakob’s score prediction: Ipswich Town 2-1 Southampton

Hull City vs Oxford United

Nobody expected Hull to pick up a draw at Coventry and they were good value for it. Charlie Hughes was key to that performance. However, this is a different type of game where many will expect them to beat Oxford. How do they handle that pressure?

I do also worry about where their goals will come from – even with Oli McBurnie up top. Oxford will be gritty and tough to break down, as always. They’d be happy with a point and I think they’ll come away with one in a rather boring scoreline.

Reflecting on our Championship score predictions from last week

Right then, before we get to the weekend, let’s have a little look back at our Championship score predictions for gameweek 1 and see how successful we were.

We started the weekend really well, actually, with Jakob correctly predicting a 1-1 draw between Ipswich and Birmingham. Callum followed that up with a correct result (but not quite the right scoreline) for Southampton and Wrexham.

Along the way over the weekend, we also called the wins for West Brom, Portsmouth, and Leicester City. So, five results out of 12… not perfect by any means, but in an unpredictable first weekend in the second tier, we’ll take it.
