Sheffield Wednesday hero back training with the Owls two years after the Miracle of Hillsborough

As a club, Sheffield Wednesday are almost unrecognisable from the one that won promotion to the Championship through the play-offs in 2023.

The Owls have put an £8m price tag on Pierce Charles as the team prepare for the first fixture of the 2025/26 campaign later on Sunday afternoon away to Leicester City.

Chris Powell has sent a warning about the future of the EFL with the South Yorkshire outfit not the first club in recent years to suffer major financial problems and they may not be the last, as supporters plan protests at the King Power Stadium.

Nevertheless, with Sheffield Wednesday off the EFL’s embargo list, signing free agents and loanees has become easier and now a hero of the Miracle of Hillsborough is training with the club.

Jack Hunt is back training with Sheffield Wednesday

Jack Hunt has made 180 appearances for the Owls across three different spells, with the right-back leaving the club in 2023 for Bristol Rovers in League One.

He left the Gas in the summer as his contract came to an end, and The Star have reported that the defender is back training with Sheffield Wednesday.

However, a move for the 34-year-old is not planned at this moment in time and he is spending time at Middlewood Road to help him build up fitness ahead of the new campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday also get the benefit of having an experienced player join in with training exercises while their squad is depleted, with Hunt also having spent time at Bradford City earlier in the summer.

Jack Hunt played a major role in the Owls’ League One promotion

Just over two years ago, the Owls went into the League One play-off semi-final second leg against Peterborough United 4-0 down.

However, Hillsborough was a cauldron of noise as Sheffield Wednesday entered the pitch, and they quickly got to work in reversing the damage as they led 2-0 at half-time.

They made it 3-0 on 71 minutes before Liam Palmer scored in the dying moments to take the clash to extra-time, where Peterborough re-took the lead on aggregate. Yet, there was another twist as Callum Patterson levelled the tier once more.

With the semi-final heading to penalties, Sheffield Wednesday had to keep their nerve and they did, with Hunt firing in the winning penalty to send the Owls to Wembley against all odds.
