Sheffield Wednesday set for EFL ‘crisis talks’ as Dejphon Chansiri seeks update on vital issue

Sheffield Wednesday are hoping that they can end August a lot more positively than they started it.

On the pitch, it has been a very good week for the Owls. They picked up their first point of the season last weekend against Wrexham, coming back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, they dumped Yorkshire rivals and Premier League outfit Leeds United out of the Carabao Cup after a penalty shootout victory. The game saw 16-year-old Will Grainger make his debut, playing alongside Liam Palmer, a hero of his.

Nevertheless, away from the football itself, concerns are still rife about the ongoing situation with Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership. There is a little bit of confidence that wages will be paid on time, but Sheffield Wednesday now want more information on signing new players.

Dejphon Chansiri seeks clarity on whether Sheffield Wednesday can sign players

The Owls have made just one signing so far this season, bringing Ethan Horvath in on an emergency loan after Pierce Charles was ruled out with a shoulder injury.

However, Henrik Pedersen is in desperate need of reinforcements, and Alan Nixon has provided an update on the situation at Hillsborough. He said: “Sheffield Wednesday are in crisis talks with the EFL today about signing players.

“Owner Dejphon Chansiri hopes to be given the go ahead to bring in new faces and will know more shortly. Chansiri is also hoping to pay the wages tomorrow – but is under pressure to show he has funds to cover the club’s needs for the season.

“Wednesday have several players lined up if they are allowed to sign. They could also sell a player or two to raise funds.

“The EFL want clarity on what the budget and financial plan is but there is hope from Wednesday’s side that they may be thrown a lifeline.”

The Owls need to add more depth to their squad

Sheffield Wednesday tried their best to rotate against Leeds on Tuesday, with Barry Bannan starting the game on the bench before coming off to help see out the match.

However, in league clashes, the substitutes that Pedersen has at his disposal often lack experience and he needs to be able to bring in more senior professionals to help fill out his bench.

It is about quantity and not quality for Sheffield Wednesday at this point in time, and while they can still sign free agents after the window shuts, they will also be keen to bring Premier League loanees in.

Nevertheless, this is a situation that should have been avoided months ago, and supporters will be hoping that John Textor comes and rescues the club soon.
