Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season preparations are in chaos as latest issue leaves Owls players in limbo

Things are going from bad to worse at the Owls this summer, with the latest development at Sheffield Wednesday regarding the club’s facilities.

Championship headlines this summer have been centred around the ongoing financial mess at Sheffield Wednesday.

After owner Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay some Owls players and staff for May, some club staff had to take up emergency funding last month to make ends meet as the club’s financial crisis continues.

The situation has seen Sheffield Wednesday hit with a transfer window punishment, which spells trouble given their inability to spend transfer or loan fees amid the summer transfer window.

Now, the latest blow for the club concerns Wednesday’s training ground, which is shockingly not yet ready for the squad’s imminent return for pre-season.

The Sheffield Wednesday training ground will not be ready for pre-season

In typical Sheffield Wednesday fashion this summer, the news has been dominated by negativity and fears for the club’s future.

Recently, billionaire John Textor has “considered” buying Wednesday after he sold his shares in Crystal Palace.

However, given that Chansiri has set an “astronomical” Owls asking price, that could fend off his interest in taking over at Hillsborough.

As well as Chansiri’s demands, another factor that could thwart pushes from prospective owners is that Sheffield Wednesday’s training ground will not be ready for the Owls squad’s scheduled return for pre-season on June 26.

The Star revealed that the club’s Middlewood Road training base will not be ready for pre-season, amid the ongoing construction works, which encompass the re-laying of training pitches and improvements to the site’s facilities.

Despite the delays not being directly due to the financial issues at the Owls, the latest issue leaves Sheffield Wednesday in a precarious position.

With their pre-season schedule and venue up in the air as a result of the training ground delays, Sheffield Wednesday fans will be fearing the worst over potential high-profile player exits.

Sheffield Wednesday figures linked with departures this summer

Given the ongoing crisis at the club, several Owls figures have been linked with moves away from Hillsborough alongside head coach Danny Rohl.

Recently, former Sheffield Wednesday forward Kevin Gallacher has tipped key Owls duo Barry Bannan and Stuart Armstrong to join Wrexham.

As well as the aforementioned pair, Rohl has gone to extreme lengths to secure his Sheffield Wednesday exit, but his reported £5m release clause still remains the major stumbling block to any move away from Hillsborough.

The ongoing financial crisis at Sheffield Wednesday continues to plague the club ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, and with the latest blow coming regarding the club’s training ground, there appears to be little light at the end of the tunnel.
