Sky Sports pundit outlines Oxford United vs Leeds United score prediction amid ‘awful pressure’ claim

Leeds United travel to Oxford United looking for three points to take another step closer to securing promotion this season.

Pundits are ‘very worried’ about Sheffield United, and promotion is now firmly in Leeds and Burnley’s sights ahead of the final four games of the run-in. Of course, Premier League football won’t be easy to survive but it is their ultimate goal.

Roy Keane has warned Leeds ahead of a potential Premier League return. Burnley and Leeds can still break Championship points records this season, which is the primary focus in the meantime.

Without a serious collapse from here, it doesn’t look as though the automatic promotion race will go to the final day of the season. Leeds and Burnley can ‘get over the line’ this weekend if results go their way.

Sam Parkin predicts the outcome of Leeds’ trip to Oxford United

A 77-game long record has underpinned Leeds’ success this season, and the first goal could — yet again — prove to be decisive in the game against Oxford. The home side need just a point or two more to be assured of survival and make themselves a part of the 2025/26 Championship line-up.

Some experts believe there are still ‘glaring problems’ for Leeds to overcome, which should offer their hosts some hope. Finding a way to play both Willy Gnonto and Dan James together could be pivotal in getting over the line from Monday onwards.

EFL pundit for the BBC and talkSPORT, as well as being a co-commentator for Sky Sports, Sam Parkin speaking to Benjamin Bloom to provide his verdict.

Bloom said: “I actually think this is the game Leeds would be most likely to [slip up] — there’s something tells me that, at 8pm after everybody has played, some long throws, Gary Rowett, low block, defensive, that Oxford could sneak a draw in this.

“Maybe, maybe, we’re going to get a late winner for Leeds. I’ll go 2-1 for Leeds with a late winner.”

Parkin added: “Yeah, I mean, the enormity of this game can’t be understated. Oxford, obviously, play Cardiff next time out. So, I’m going to go for a real rally from Oxford.

“But maybe just edged out by the odd goal, which will be awful in terms of the pressure that could still build. I will go for 2-1 Leeds.”

Bloom interrupted: “No, I have taken your 2-1, Sam. You’re going to have to change that one, mate.”

Parkin concluded: “I will go 3-1 Leeds.”

The crucial Oxford United and Leeds United stats you simply have to know

Ao Tanaka’s calming and controlling influence could be key in a game where Leeds will dominate the ball, even after his Player of the Year snub. Leeds thumped their hosts 4-0 the game prior to Gary Rowett’s arrival, but Oxford have been much improved under his tutelage.

Since then, they have only lost games by one or two goals, while Rowett’s side would also be seventh had the season started after that game; it highlights that this game is a potential banana skin for Leeds. The recent games to Luton Town and Portsmouth serve as a reminder of how difficult it can be.

Historically, Leeds have had the better of this fixture. Oxford have lost four of their previous seven league encounters with Leeds, including each of the last three by an aggregate score of 10-3. This will also be Leeds’ first EFL trip to Oxford since a 4-2 win in March 1990 under Howard Wilkinson.

Leeds were promoted that season, while the three previous encounters have averaged six goals per game. Today will also be game six in their third strip, having won four and drawn one in it previously this season on the road.

The silver lining for the home side is that Leeds have won just one of their last six league games on Good Friday (D3 L2), drawing 2-2 at Watford this time last season in 2024. Will it be a happy Easter for Oxford or for Leeds?
