West Brom’s season has fizzled out in the latter stages of the season, with Tony Mowbray relieved of his duties recently after being unable to continue the good work of Carlos Corberan.
West Brom were 7th and firmly in play-off contention when Corberan departed the club for Valencia during the Christmas period. They have since dropped out of the play-off picture and into mid-table.

Tony Mowbray has been replaced by James Morrison for the time being, although QPR’s Marti Cifuentes is of interest to the Baggies ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.
The Baggies can still have an impact on who is a part of that campaign, with Luton Town travelling to the Hawthorns on final day in search of points to ensure safety. But this weekend in the Championship was one to forget for them.

West Brom’s dreadful away record hits new low
The 0-0 with Cardiff City relegated the Bluebirds on Saturday. It was a game with a fair amount of shots (35) and chances, with 2.89xG generated in total by both sides. However, the end result was very much a microcosm of both teams’ recent form.
West Brom haven’t won since November on their travels. that came via a 2-1 win against Hull City. Funnily enough, they are the worst home side in the division. Hull have lost more than any other side on their own patch, with 10 defeats; they have also won just five times.
West Brom, by contrast have been strong at home, having accrued 38 points from 22 home fixtures and lost just four times in the process. Their 10 wins could be increased on the final day of the season, which would give them top ten level form in the division at home.

The problem is how poor they have been away from home, in a season which has broken record after the 0-0 with Cardiff. This is the first time in the club’s history outside of the top flight that they have gone 15 games without an away win, with eight draws and seven defeats in that time.
It has cost them their play-off place and Mowbray his job, which many supporters are ‘gutted’ about. They will have plenty of soul-searching to do this summer to get the club back on track next season.

Marti Cifuentes could be Carlos Corberan Mark II if West Brom appoint him
QPR came into the season full of optimism and looked like a team on the up after a difficult campaign in 2023/24 spent in and around the relegation zone. However, Cifuentes guided them to safety against all odds, having improved the side in a variety of different ways.
Following his arrival in late October, and after a poor start to the season under Gareth Ainsworth when they looked one of the favourites for relegation, Cifuentes’ side turned things around and they have looked transformed under the Spaniard’s tutelage, especially out of possession.
That aspect is the primary similarity to Cifuentes, and is the element to West Brom’s play that they seem to have lost most. Unfortunately, he is somewhat limited by what he can do with QPR.
After some eye-catching signings and a shift to improving the team in possession, many expected QPR to be a club nowhere near relegation trouble this term. It has not transpired as they had hoped, even despite achieving another mid-table finish.
He has done that with limited resources, and most would agree that the Baggies have a better squad than QPR’s right now, where he would almost certainly have a bigger budget as well under Shilen Patel.
Now, after it was suggested the ex-Hammarby boss could leave QPR due to issues with CEO Christian Nourry by The Sun, he could be looking for a new challenge. West Brom could provide that — firstly, he has Championship experience, but also because the great work he has done shouldn’t be underestimated.
