EFL decision has plunged Sheffield Wednesday into further uncertainty, Henrik Pedersen has been left ‘unsure’

Sheffield Wednesday have been bombarded with issues throughout the summer, and their most recent one has left Henrik Pedersen incredibly ‘unsure’.

The Owls begin their Championship campaign against Leicester City this Sunday, where the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust has organised a demonstration against Dejphon Chansiri.

This summer has been disastrous for Sheffield Wednesday, who have endured crisis after crisis under the stewardship of Chansiri.

Sheffield Wednesday’s first team squad has been decimated by several departures, all of which have been either on a free or in deals that have seen players move for a fee far below their market value.

Things have now gone from bad to worse for Sheffield Wednesday, who have been hit with fresh sanctions by the EFL, which has left new boss Henrik Pedersen unsure on how it impacts the Owls.

What are the EFL’s new restrictions on Sheffield Wednesday

It was reported on Wednesday ‘that the EFL have imposed further restrictions on Sheffield Wednesday by refusing to register new player contracts, subject to the owner DC providing assurances that he can satisfy the payments.’

This has put further pressure on Dejphon Chansiri this summer, especially after the EFL’s statement to the Thai owner, which read: “The League wants to see a strong, stable and competitive Sheffield Wednesday, and for that to happen we are clear that the current owner needs either to fund the club to meet its obligations or make good on his commitment to sell to a well-funded party, for fair market value – ending the current uncertainty and impasse.”

As a result, plenty of ambiguity around the decision made by the EFL has been sparked, such as whether Barry Bannan’s future at Sheffield Wednesday is now in doubt or not, despite signing a new contract at the club.

What Henrik Pedersen has said about the Owls’ restrictions

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen has since been left in the dark regarding the club’s situation, with many in the Owls hierarchy still trying to work out how the further restrictions imposed will impact them.

Speaking to The Star, Pedersen said: “I thought I knew, but now I am a little bit after the statement yesterday.

“So right now I am also waiting for clarity here on what we can do and what we can’t do. But in the background, Kevin (Beadell, head of recruitment), the coaches and his staff are spending a lot of time to prepare for the window.”

Whilst this restriction ultimately impacts Dejphon Chansiri the most – a positive step which will hopefully put the Thai owner in a more precarious position, Sheffield Wednesday boss Pedersen has suffered a huge knock-on effect as a result.

Sheffield Wednesday kick off their season this weekend, and the last thing that the Dane needs are further restrictions to familiarise himself with.
