What Daniel Farke said about Leeds United transfers may point towards Elland Road exit

Leeds United clinched promotion back to the Premier League on Monday after Burnley saw off Sheffield United at Turf Moor, but Daniel Farke’s future is already in question.

When Leeds lost in the Championship play-off final to Southampton last year, many expected Daniel Farke to leave Elland Road.

But, to his credit, the German recovered from the heartbreak of missing out on promotion that time, with the Whites going one better this term.

Remarkably, Leeds’ current points tally of 94 has seen Farke break one of Marcelo Bielsa’s records, as the Argentine tactician accrued 93 in the 2019/20 campaign.

However, despite achieving the club’s ultimate aim this season, with Farke praising the ‘unbelievable’ mentality of his players, his future has already been put in doubt.

Daniel Farke’s comments on transfers could result in Leeds United exit

According to the Daily Mail, Leeds are considering sacking Farke as they’re concerned about his record at Premier League level with Norwich City.

Although it would be seen as an incredibly harsh decision, considering how hard he worked to get them there, the 48-year-old has won just six of his 49 matches in the top-flight, telling of his problems.

The Whites, however, will only hire a clear upgrade on the German, someone of an elite level who could take them to greater heights.

It’s a bizarre situation for the club to be in after winning promotion, but worryingly, the comments Farke made on transfers after the thrashing of Stoke could point towards him feeling unhappy and exiting Elland Road.

“We lost most of key players again and we’re working also under pretty tight restrictions,” Farke said when asked how difficult the season was.

“For example, in January, I would have liked to add a few players and a bit more quality but we were not allowed to do this.

“I was a bit jealous, If I’m honest, of some other clubs but also I had to act a little bit and pretend I’m fully convinced.

“I was convinced because I love to work with this group, but it was such a difficult task and such a tight race with so many good competitors.”

Burnley and Sheffield United showed ambition when Leeds didn’t

Farke wasn’t pleased with their lack of recruitment in the January transfer window, letting Joe Gelhardt join Hull City while bringing no one in to replace him.

That was in stark contrast to Sheffield United, who signed Tom Cannon for £10m from Leicester City, while luring Hamza Choudhury, Harry Clarke and Rob Holding to the club on loan.

Burnley’s headline addition, meanwhile, was the loan of Marcus Edwards from Sporting Lisbon, a player who gave them the edge in the race for promotion.

Although failing to capture anyone didn’t cost Leeds a finish in the top two, Farke was right to highlight his frustrations, leaving the club with a decision to stick or twist.
