Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday tenure was already ruined in April after scathing review

Sheffield Wednesday and Danny Rohl have finally ended their toxic relationship after months of indecision and friction, but he should have walked away a long time ago.

The saga surrounding Danny Rohl’s future has been just one of many ongoing stories at Sheffield Wednesday this summer. With the club in financial crisis and with players leaving in droves, it’s been hard to focus on what the manager is up to at times.

Rohl had put himself in the shop window for a number of other clubs over the last few months, but failed to secure another job elsewhere.

His ill-fated return to S6 didn’t last long, with Sheffield Wednesday players unable to work with their manager after deeming his actions to be a sign of betrayal.

We broke the news that Rohl would be leaving Wednesday, but it took almost two weeks to negotiate the severance terms. Now, with the German coach gone, it’s worth looking back at his past comments, and it’s obvious what was going to happen.

Danny Rohl ripped into Sheffield Wednesday players in April

Speaking to the press after a 2-0 defeat at the bet365 Stadium back in April, Rohl was clearly livid with what he had seen from his players in a lacklustre display against Stoke City.

He said: “I think my feeling is disappointment, but two things – first, we have to separate the last four or five results from the previous 18 months,. At the moment, we’re damaging our good work a little bit. And on the other side, the last couple of weeks, some players showed that they’re not able to play my football. We speak about quality, decision-making.

“If you want to improve as a club, you have to do a lot of things right in the summer, otherwise – and this is what I tell you – next season will be a big, big fight to stay in this league because we have a big group of players that are not able to play at this level – not my football. I must say this today very directly.

“I think I protect all my players again and again, I take all the responsibility, I give chances now to players to see what they can do, but the results at the moment are not what they should be. And I demand, at the moment, not special things. For me, it’s about basics.”

Owls fans were not best pleased with the way Rohl seemingly threw his players under the bus at the time, and things truly did start to unravel from there on out.

Many suggested Rohl himself had already checked out by that point, with suggestions that he had one eye on securing another job. Ironically, there are actually very few options for Rohl now that he has finally left Sheffield Wednesday.

Considering the way he spoke about his squad, it’s hardly surprising that so many were against him coming back earlier this month.

Henrik Pedersen has to bring harmony to Hillsborough

With Chris Powell also following Rohl out the door, it seems obvious that Henrik Pedersen will be the next Sheffield Wednesday manager.

We were told Pedersen actually wanted Rohl to stay, but with the players and fans behind him, the new man will have one key objective and that is to bring some harmony to Hillsborough amid all the chaos.

Pedersen needs to sign some players, too, of course. But establishing a sense of togetherness between the fans and the club is key here, as they all try to find some light at the end of the tunnel after what has been an absolute nightmare of a summer.
