Frank Lampard set for transfer blow as Bundesliga outfit close in on ‘brilliant’ Coventry City star

Frank Lampard’s Coventry City have a number of players who are likely to be attractive to clubs higher up the footballing ladder.

Following promotion to the second tier with Mark Robins in 2020, Coventry City have finished 16th, 12th, fifth, ninth, and fifth. The squad has become much higher in terms of quality in that time.

So far this summer, Frank Lampard’s side have signed Kaine Kesler-Hayden in a big-money switch, Miguel Angel Brau on a free transfer, and Carl Rushworth on loan.

The likes of Luis Binks and Jamie Paterson are the only notable players to depart Cov, with continuity clearly the key to Lampard’s side as they prepare for Championship football in 2025/26.

However, the likes of Ben Sheaf, Haji Wright, Jack Rudoni, and Milan van Ewijk will have interest at a higher level, given the quality of their displays for a long while for the Sky Blues; and the latter could now be set for a transfer.

Wolfsburg chase Coventry City’s Milan van Ewijk

Earlier in the window, EFL Analysis revealed that Wright is of interest to Leicester City and Ipswich Town following their relegations from the Premier League.

Jack Rudoni is also on Sheffield United’s radar as a possible replacement for Gus Hamer, who is wanted by Leeds United, PSV, and more.

But the above duo aren’t the only ones being touted with an exit from the CBS, as right-back Milan van Ewijk is being courted by multiple clubs.

Coventry want around £8 million for van Ewijk amid interest from Burnley, as EFL Analysis exclusively revealed earlier this summer.

Now, it’s reported from Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg that Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg are pushing to sign van Ewijk.

He reports that talks with the player are already at an advanced stage for the defender under contract with Coventry City until 2027.

It’s not the first time Paul Simonis’ team have looked at the Championship market this summer, with Sheffield United’s Vini Souza joining Wolfsburg.

A move between Wolfsburg and Norwich City’s Josh Sargent fell through, but the cream of the Championship crop appears to be a priority in their transfer strategy.

Frank Lampard’s comments on Coventry City’s Milan van Ewijk

Following a mistake in the play-off semi-finals against Sunderland late on in the first leg, van Ewijk was consoled by Lampard.

“I’ll speak to him. It’s football. He’s been brilliant for us this season. Mistakes happen in football,” he said.

Fortunately for Coventry, they did something not many clubs are able to do. The Sky Blues have been able to succession plan for van Ewijk’s departure ahead of schedule.

Van Ewijk turns 25 very soon but Kesler-Hayden is only 22 himself, and with bags of potential after winning Preston’s Player of the Year award in 2024/25. The pair are both quick and attack-minded full-backs.

The cash for van Ewijk should therefore be put to other areas of the team instead, with more quality required if they are to challenge at the Championship summit this season.
