Ryan Mason has had a perfect start to life at the helm of West Brom, having secured three wins from as many games.

The Baggies have been linked to several incomings and outgoings before the close of the summer transfer window, with the most worrying potential departure being that of Tom Fellows to Everton.

Ryan Mason has recently issued a hands-off warning to clubs interested in signing West Brom’s ‘outstanding’ talent, Mikey Johnston.

Meanwhile, West Brom have been linked to the loan signing of James McConnell from Liverpool, with the Baggies set to battle several Championship clubs for the midfielder’s signature.

Ryan Mason has now made it clear the exact type of player that West Brom are targeting due to their business in the transfer market to this point.

West Brom need to sign leaders

West Brom lost a huge figure in the dressing room when Kyle Bartley retired, while the departure of Torbjorn Heggem to Bologna for £10 million was also a significant blow.

Ryan Mason has admitted that the loss of these men and a few others has had an impact on the dressing room that he is attempting to correct in the transfer market, as seen with his signing of Krystian Bielik from Birmingham City.

As reported in the Express and Star, he said: “We’ve lost some leaders and some real—I wouldn’t say characters—but senior players.

“Krystian is certainly someone who we know has got the personality and character to impact and influence the changing room.”

Ryan Mason aims for Portsmouth fixture

The West Brom manager is obviously targeting a win as the Baggies return to the Hawthorns to face Portsmouth this weekend.

However, he believes that a victory will be key to them continuing their fine start so they can push for a promotion battle come the end of the season; however, at this point he wants to keep expectations realistic, as reported by the Express and Star.

He said: “I don’t really feel it from my side because I really trust and believe in not only me but also the team of people that I’ve got working with me that are going to deliver.

“I think it’s more for the players. When you win, it can accelerate things.

“To win the first couple of games in the league is super positive for us. It’s not easy to do that.

“We’re going to enjoy it, but also understand and be humble that we’ve worked extremely hard for it, and that’s going to need to continue.”
