Sheffield Wednesday fans fear the worst as Pierce Charles shares worrying social media post

Pierce Charles has sent alarm bells ringing across the Sheffield Wednesday fan base after posting a cryptic image on his Instagram story.

The 20-year-old first choice Owls goalkeeper was recently ruled out with a shoulder injury, and the South Yorkshire club had to sign Cardiff City’s Ethan Horvath on an emergency loan amid their ongoing ownership issues under Dejphon Chansiri.

Wednesday had hoped to be boosted by being allowed to make loan signings, with the Owls wanting to bring in Manchester City’s Jaden Heskey to bolster their threadbare squad.

But just as Wednesdayites dealt with news of the EFL blocking that move, attention has now suddenly turned to one of their former youth players, with fears he may be heading for the exit.

Charles has been the subject of heavy transfer interest this summer following his rise to being Wednesday’s no.1 last term and the club’s dire financial situation.

Last month, French outfit Strasbourg reportedly had a bid for the Northern Ireland international rejected.

However, they were said to still be keen on a deal. Reports stated Strasbourg were willing to send him back to Hillsborough on loan and pay his wages, and a transfer fee would likely be music to Chansiri’s ears.

Leicester City and Rangers have also been linked with the young stopper, however any news of a transfer had since gone quiet.

But now, with hours to go before the transfer window deadline, Charles has uploaded a picture of himself playing for Wednesday on his Instagram story.

The image shows him waving to the crowd at the end of a game, with the song ‘Indecision’ by Sampha over the top, sparking concerns amongst the fan base that he could be signalling his exit.

“I hope this doesn’t mean what I think it means,” one supporter wrote on X.

Another said: “Pierce Charles has just posted this onto his insta story… IF he’s gone it just proves that Chansiri is stripping assets to hold on to the club for as long as he possibly can, I keep saying it but I honestly can’t see him selling us! Disgraceful.”

“Pierce Charles leaving to cap off a brilliant summer of pain,” a third added.

However, local The Star journalist Joe Crann has eased fears, stating he had ‘heard nothing to suggest Charles is going anywhere’ and he was recovering from surgery well.

Piers Charles misses out on Northern Ireland internationals after surgery

Wednesday boss Pedersen confirmed Charles underwent shoulder surgery last week.

He is missing Northern Ireland’s international clashes against Luxembourg and Germany after originally being called up as a result, but it’s hoped that he will be back for October’s games versus Slovakia and Germany.

Fleetwood Town’s Stephen McMullan has been called up instead.

There are fears that Charles’ injury is worse than initially thought, though. On Friday, Pedersen said: “I hope for the best, but the specialist has said that he needs to come in before we can see exactly how long things are.

“It’s because some things you can scan and some things you can’t scan. Let’s see what they are saying and we can speak about this later.”

The youngster has already earned 20 caps at international level, as well as 18 appearances for Wednesday.
