Sheffield Wednesday could be set for a very disappointing transfer deadline day, with no new arrivals planned and potential sales still to come.
All summer, Sheffield Wednesday fans have seen their squad depleted as Dejphon Chansiri sells off their best assets to keep the club afloat.
We’ve already witnessed Djeidi Gassama, Josh Windass, and Michael Smith depart, and there’s talk of Bailey Cadamarteri being next to go.
The problem is, the Owls are still under transfer restrictions after the EFL doubled down on their stance that Chansiri cannot pay new players. So, with no more signings in the pipeline, where do Wednesday go from here?

Sheffield Wednesday fans think EFL could force Chansiri out
It’s very likely that Sheffield Wednesday will be one of the quietest clubs on transfer deadline day. While fans are clearly gutted about the prospect of the squad receiving no reinforcements for the season ahead, they do appreciate the long-term impact this decision might have on Chansiri.
One fan took to Twitter/X to say: “As fans we should all be very happy with the EFL’s stance on this. They aren’t letting him function. Just like we the fans are trying to do with the boycotts. Sends a clear message to him: SELL NOW.”
Another commented on the fact the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) is looking at Chansiri, adding: “If they ask him to prove funding for the season before agreeing then he can’t, that lines him up for when the IFR gets powers in November. Every step pushes him closer to the door. It’s s— but it’s necessary.”
A third fan said: “The chances of him showing the EFL funds are slim to none, whether he has it or not. He will not understand why he should have to do this and he’ll argue about it until the cows come home. It’s good pressure from the EFL to be honest, struggle to fault them.”
Obviously, there are downsides to it all. One fan lamented the fact that Chansiri may well sell the club’s two best young players, writing: “It’s a shame they can’t stop him selling Pierce Charles and [Bailey] Cadamarteri.”
Other sections of the fanbase are more angry with the EFL and concerned about the quality of the Sheffield Wednesday squad.
“So come winter when the injuries have hit, the EFL will be expecting us to field 16-year-olds twice a week then? Surely the PFA will have something to say about that. And they said they want a competitive Sheffield Wednesday,” one said.
Another added, “The EFL just want to stick the knife in all the time with Wednesday.”
In a more measured response, one supporter harked back to the claims that the EFL are not doing enough to get Chansiri out of the club, writing: “I get this, but if the EFL’s thoughts are that he can’t fund the season then that should fall under ‘not fit and proper’, so why don’t they do something about it regarding Chansiri as well as the club?”

What does the Sheffield Wednesday squad need?
Henrik Pedersen has a pretty good foundation of a squad already, despite all the issues surrounding Sheffield Wednesday. One thing the team does have in abundance is spirit, and it’s clear they will not go down without a fight this season.
The one signing they have made, Ethan Horvath, impressed fans last week in the Carabao Cup win over Leeds United. In that regard, they’re probably sorted in the goalkeeping department.
However, the Owls are desperate for defensive reinforcements. They’ve long-been linked with Harry Amass and it’s thought the Manchester United starlet is keen to sign on loan. He would add much-needed quality on the left side of the defence.
In attack, Sheffield Wednesday don’t look too bad. If they can keep Cadamarteri, they’ve also got Jamal Lowe and Ike Ugbo, as well as Charlie McNeill just behind them.
Instead, Pedersen will largely be looking at the centre of midfield and be wishing he had more options to cover for club legend Barry Bannan. Sean Fusire is a Sheffield Wednesday youngster to watch, but someone with more experience would be useful.
You’d say Sheffield Wednesday need at least four or five new signings to have a truly competitive squad, but that is clearly not going to happen now.
