Why Valerien Ismael’s most important signing this summer is the ‘perfect fit’ for Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers were incredibly busy during the summer transfer window, still completing deals right up to the deadline of the market.

The Lancashire club have seen some major figures depart the club for what they will believe are greener pastures, with Lewis Travis moving to Derby County, Dominic Hyam to Wrexham and Tyrhys Dolan to Espanyol.

Valerien Ismael has seen the club bring in some additions to strengthen his side and sign players to fit his approach to football; time will tell whether they are to be successes and if the manager will be achieving his aims.

However, there is one signing that has now become imperative to the club if they will be successful this season with their first aim to secure Championship football for next season.

Sean McLoughlin is the most important Blackburn Rovers summer signing

The heart of defence at Blackburn Rovers has gone through a dramatic change as they have bid farewell to three of their key players from last season.

Danny Batth has joined Derby County after his contract expired at the end of the last season, while Dion Sanderson returned to Birmingham City after his loan finished, and on deadline day Dominic Hyam opted to depart for Wrexham.

Blackburn Rovers have only signed one recognisable central defender in the summer transfer window, being Sean McLoughlin, while Lewis Miller joined from Hibernian and is viewed as a versatile defender.

McLoughlin will be expected to fill the void left by Dominic Hyam, as Scott Wharton continues to return from his long-term injury.

However, they will be without the player for a couple of games due to suspension after he got a red card in their defeat to Norwich City in the Championship.

Valerien Ismael is a big fan of Sean McLoughlin

The Blackburn Rovers manager has spoken fondly about the signing of the Irish defender this summer, particularly on the day that he signed him.

Speaking with the club website, Ismael said: “It’s an important one for us because we can’t only rely on Scott [Wharton] – who is back on track – after one year out of action.

“Sean will bring that experience we need, he knows the league, he’s a left-footed centre-back – which is the profile I wanted – who is very good on the ball and a lovely guy.

“He’s the perfect fit for this squad. He wanted to come to us, and we carry that with us for every new signing.

“People like Sean will bring us fresh energy, and he, like all of our new signings, is buzzing to be joining us.”
