Chris Wilder takes significant step in securing Sheffield United manager vacancy

It seems as though it is just a matter of time until Chris Wilder becomes the new Sheffield United manager for the third time in his career.

It was just three months ago when the Blades parted ways with the 57-year-old, but he looks set to take charge of the club against Charlton Athletic this weekend after Ruben Selles was sacked on Sunday.

Five defeats from five games to start the Championship campaign has left the South Yorkshire outfit rooted to the bottom of the table, but if there is anyone who knows how to get the best out of this club, then it’s Wilder.

An official announcement is imminent, but while Sheffield United prepare their social media pages for that moment, the soon-to-be new boss is already getting to work.

Prince Abdullah may also be returning to the Blades soon, but for now, the focus is on Wilder and what he can do to help turn this team’s fortunes around.

He’s wasting no time in preparing for Charlton, with the former Middlesbrough boss taking training at Shirecliffe on Monday morning following that humiliating 5-0 loss to Ipswich Town on Friday evening, according to The Daily Mail.

It’s imperative that Sheffield United start scoring goals immediately, with the team lacking a goal threat so far and Tyrese Campbell will be looking to add to his tally sooner rather than later as the only Blade to have found the back of the net in 2025/26.

Meanwhile, Wilder can get the best out of Gustavo Hamer once again after a difficult start to the campaign for the Dutchman, with the defence also a huge concern.

Chris Wilder is showing why COH Sports should have never sacked him

After accruing 92 points in the Championship last season, with two points deducted from the final tally, many questioned the decision to sack Wilder, including England cricketer Joe Root.

Sheffield United did not have a good summer transfer window by all accounts, and their squad is weaker than what they ended the 2024/25 campaign with. However, this is a chance for their soon-to-be new manager to prove a point to COH Sports.

Charlton have had a mixed start to the season, and while they do look to be a threat at home, as with any club who are promoted from League One, away form can be harder to find.

An early goal at Bramall Lane for the hosts will take off a huge amount of pressure, but another defeat could leave Wilder questioning whether he has the talent at his disposal to turn the situation around.
