Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday departure has landed one Championship manager a bizarre statistic

It’s been a summer of change in the Championship.

With just over a week to go until we get underway in the second tier, there have been plenty of new signings for supporters to get excited about, while clubs have slowly but surely started to release home, away and third shirts.

Meanwhile, at Sheffield Wednesday, the last few months have been nothing short of a disaster. Danny Rohl has now left the Owls, and although the German’s departure may be a positive thing, it is a very late change.

Nevertheless, for another Championship boss, it hands them a peculiar statistic that shows the volatility of football management.

Portsmouth’s John Mousinho now holds one Championship record

This summer has seen a number of new managers take charge of clubs, with Bristol City, Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion just three of those who have new bosses for 2025/26.

There have been 11 managerial changes for the new campaign, and this means that Portsmouth’s John Mousinho is the only boss to still be in charge of their club out of the teams who played in the Championship last season.

Ignoring the six sides who were either relegated from the Premier League or promoted from League One, every club except Pompey have changed manager in the last 12 months.

Sheffield United were slammed for parting ways with Chris Wilder, while Watford went early in sacking Tom Cleverley. This has been a summer of instability, and it may hand Portsmouth an advantage heading into the campaign.

Phil Parkinson is the longest-serving manager in the second tier

Mousinho took charge of the Blues in January 2023, guiding the club to the League One title in 2024, before avoiding relegation from the Championship last season.

However, he is just the third-longest serving manager in the second tier for 2025/26, with Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Wrexham’s Phil Parkinson ahead of him.

The latter has been in charge of the Red Dragons since 1 July 2021, and he has won three-successive promotions with the Welsh outfit. However, both of those did not manage in the Championship, leaving Mousinho on his own with that one statistic.

Nevertheless, nobody comes close to the longest-serving head coach in the EFL, with Harrogate Town’s Simon Weaver having been in charge of his team since May 2009.
