Derby County’s Callum Brittain interest can surely mean only one thing for out-of-favour pair

Derby County are three games into their pre-season schedule, and their new signings are starting to settle in at Pride Park.

It’s been a busy summer so far for the Rams, and John Eustace has been keen to strengthen his attack with Patrick Agyemang the standout addition so far.

Carlton Morris may just be the starting striker in the first weeks of the campaign due to Agyemang arriving injured, but this will not be a major concern for the East Midlands outfit due to the experience that the ex-Luton Town man has.

Nevertheless, bringing in more defenders has also been a desire of Eustace’s, with Owen Beck looking likely to join. However, he is not the only Blackburn Rovers related full-back who is liked by Derby, and if a move for Callum Brittain comes off, two players could be in trouble.

Ryan Nyambe and Joe Ward could be at risk if Derby County sign a right-back

Valerien Ismael has said that a deal has not been agreed between the two clubs yet, although that does not mean one is still impossible.

However, what is interesting to see is that Derby have been in the market for a right-back – despite having three on the books.

Kane Wilson has been the preferred option for the last two years, with both Ryan Nyambe and Joe Ward struggling for fitness throughout this time. Now, the pair are set to miss the opening weeks of the campaign and the possibility of a new full-back arriving could see one of the pair leave.

Nyambe is a much more defensive option compared to Ward, who is more of a wing-back in that sense and Eustace may be forced into a decision before the transfer window shuts on 1 September.

John Eustace needs to cover for all eventualities

Wilson has just one year on his deal at Derby, having triggered an extension at the end of last season, and until he signs a new long-term contract there will be fears that he could depart.

Ward has found it tough to find any sort of form due to his fitness issues, while consistency has been difficult for Nyambe.

Therefore, the Rams should push for a right-back at some point this summer to ensure that they have cover no matter what happens.

This is going to be a long Championship season and Eustace will need his key players to be fit throughout if Derby are going to have a successful campaign and the right flank must be strengthened to do so.
