Kieran Maguire tells Dejphon Chansiri his £100m Sheffield Wednesday valuation is not ‘logical’

Sheffield Wednesday fans are still desperately waiting for the club to be sold and for Dejphon Chansiri to leave, but his valuation of the Owls is causing issues.

It has been a long and arduous summer for Sheffield Wednesday, with financial issues causing a whole host of problems for the Owls.

Dejphon Chansiri’s failure to pay wages and HMRC bills on time has seen key players depart for next to nothing and a transfer ban placed on the club.

Rumours of a takeover have lingered for the past few months with the likes of John Textor and Amanda Staveley mooted as interested parties. But, Chansiri still remains, for now.

Kieran Maguire explains why Dejphon Chansiri is wrong to demand £100m

Discussing the bizarre and worrying situation in S6 with BBC Sport, finance expert Kieran Maguire shared his thoughts on Chansiri’s £100m valuation of Sheffield Wednesday, and explained why it’s way off where it should be.

Maguire said: “Most EFL clubs are being sold for roughly two or two-and-a-half times their revenue. In Sheffield Wednesday’s case, that puts them in the region of about £40m to £50m.

“When you take into consideration the state of the stadium, and the fact the club doesn’t own it, they should be towards the bottom of that scale. The £100m valuation appears to be without merit and has no logical backing.”

It is thought Chansiri previously rejected a $75m offer from Adam Shaw and his US-based consortium. That may have been a mistake, according to Maguire.

“I think Chansiri is perhaps being a little naive,” he added. “Trying to work out his motives, other than trying to get back as much of his losses as he can, is a bit confusing.”

Independent Football Regulator could expedite Sheffield Wednesday takeover

After an embarrassing transfer window for Sheffield Wednesday and Chansiri, it’s clear something has to change or the Owls are doomed for relegation.

Thankfully, the fans are not giving up in their quest to make life difficult for their troublesome owner. Maguire praised this, adding, “The commitment from the Wednesday fans to get behind the team, not the regime, is designed to put further pressure on Chansiri.”

While the EFL are unable or unwilling to act against Chansiri, it is thought the Independent Football Regulator will look at Chansiri very closely when it becomes operational in November.

If the IFR does find a way to get Chansiri out of the club, it will be very interesting to see who takes over and just how much they actually end up paying for Sheffield Wednesday.
