Dejphon Chansiri told he should be ’embarrassed’ after Sheffield Wednesday’s deadline day calamity

A disastrous summer transfer window came to a disappointing end for Sheffield Wednesday on Monday with just one new player through the door on deadline day.

The theme of Sheffield Wednesday’s summer has been disappointment and anger, and that doesn’t look like it will change any time soon.

With multiple key players departing over the last few months amid Dejphon Chansiri’s financial issues, Henrik Pedersen has been left with a threadbare squad that will be fighting for its life in the Championship this season.

While other clubs were striking deals on transfer deadline day, the Owls desperately scrambled to get just one signing over the line, and Chansiri has been blamed once again for the club’s shortcomings.

Alan Biggs condemns Dejphon Chansiri after Sheffield Wednesday transfer struggles

Wednesday finally signed an outfield player with Harry Amass arriving on loan from Manchester United. They were also unable to sign Jaden Heskey from Man City due to the EFL not approving the move.

On Wednesday’s plans behind the scenes on deadline day, Biggs wrote: “Understand they finally captured Harry Amass (hugely helped by Man Utd), who was one of FOUR players Henrik Pedersen lined up from Premier League clubs. Heard the others were from Man City, Chelsea and Crystal Palace. Costing around £500 per week had they been cleared.”

In the end, Amass was the only new Sheffield Wednesday signing on the day, and it all came down to Man Utd offering to pay his wages for the loan spell.

On that matter, Biggs delivered a scathing review of how Chansiri operates, writing: “Dejphon Chansiri should be embarrassed that he effectively had to rely on charity to get one Sheffield Wednesday loan through.

“Having, when the boot was on the other foot, prevented so many of his players from being loaned out. When, as Man United realise, there is value to it.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer deadline day recap

While we were never going to see any record-breaking deals made by Sheffield Wednesday this summer, we at least expected the Owls to plug the many gaps in the squad.

Aside from Amass and Heskey, there was barely even a sniff of a transfer link for Wednesday on deadline day, though. Based on what Biggs said about the Premier League loanees that never were and the wages they’d have carried, it would only have been very young players.

It’s still unclear exactly where the EFL stand on Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer situation. It looks like they’re happy for deals to be done as long as Chansiri is not responsible for player wages, which is not a great position to be in.

Hopefully, Wednesday can sign some free agents in the coming days and weeks to replenish Pedersen’s tiny squad. It’ll be a long wait until January if they don’t.
