Sheffield Wednesday’s plight continued with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Stoke City at the weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday were beaten 3-0 by Stoke City on Saturday afternoon in the Owls’ first home game of the season.

Ahead of the game, Sheffield Wednesday fans carried a coffin to Hillsborough in protest against owner Dejphon Chansiri, in a display which mirrored the mood regarding the club’s future.

Sheffield Wednesday are tipped to finish rock bottom of the Championship this season, and the Owls currently sit second from the foot of the table, one place above their steel city neighbours, Sheffield United.

With matters on and off the field debilitating Sheffield Wednesday, the defeat to Stoke was a “stark reminder” of one thing in the Owls’ fight for Championship survival.

Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat against Stoke City was a ‘stark reminder’

Head coach Henrik Pedersen held talks with Chansiri about the future of Owls goalkeeper Pierce Charles after the Stoke defeat, with several Premier League sides tracking Charles.

Unfortunately for Pedersen, in-form Charles could do nothing to prevent the heavy defeat against the Potters.

After the game, Sky Sports commentator Rob Jones shared his thoughts on the significance of the Owls’ defeat, highlighting that ‘spirit alone’ will not keep the Owls safe from relegation.

Sky Sports News commentator Jones said: “The spirit both on and off the field is evident at Sheffield Wednesday, but their 3-0 defeat to Stoke was a stark reminder that pluck alone won’t be enough for Championship survival.

“The Wednesday fans marched through Hillsborough Park before kick-off, and their whistle protest had barely begun when Million Manhoef fired Stoke into an early lead.

“The supporters, though, stayed right behind the players; it is the owner Dejphon Chansiri who they understandably directed their anger towards.

“Wednesday started the first half slowly, and did so again in the second when Divin Mubama doubled the lead, Manhoef’s second completed the job for Stoke.”

Sheffield Wednesday are in desperate need of their first win this season

The beginning of the 2025/26 season for Sheffield Wednesday has matched the turmoil at the club throughout the summer.

At the weekend, Sheffield Wednesday travel to Wrexham for a Championship clash against fellow strugglers before a visit from Leeds United in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

West Brom beat Wrexham 3-2 at the weekend, with Isaac Price starring for the Baggies thanks to his brace.

Leeds will be hoping that the Hillsborough issue Pedersen pinpointed after the Stoke defeat is fixed for their clash next week.

Equally, the Owls boss will be praying for his victory as Sheffield Wednesday boss, before relegation fears become a reality.
