Sheffield United ace faces uncertainty under Chris Wilder as Ruben Selles dream destroyed

One Sheffield United player could be hindered by the departure of Ruben Selles, having supposedly joined the club to play under the Spaniard.

Sheffield United have decided to sack Ruben Selles from his role after leaving the club in an untenable position in the Championship.

Selles’ reign has seen it end as the only Sheffield United manager to not win a competitive game, having lost all five Championship games, leaving the Blades rock bottom of the Championship.

As the Spaniard departs, Chris Wilder will take over as Sheffield United boss, having taken training on Monday.

The return of Wilder is set to be a significant boost for Sheffield United following their period of turbulence, but there is one player who could be hindered as a result.

Louie Barry will be gutted following Ruben Selles’ Sheffield United departure

One of Ruben Selles’ key signings was Louie Barry on loan from Aston Villa, having coached the winger in the back-end of the 2024/25 season before he was hit with injury problems.

Nonetheless, Selles had always been a huge fan of Barry, with the Spaniard describing him as a ‘really good player’ who can be ‘as good as any other in the league’.

There is no denying that Selles’ initial arrival in S2 was a deciding factor towards him choosing to join Sheffield United, and with such a quick turnaround, he may not have such strong guarantees of game time under the incoming Chris Wilder.

Chris Wilder could favour Gus Hamer over Louie Barry

Not only could Louie Barry be losing a coach whom he knows well, but his departure could hinder his chances of making the starting side as consistently.

Barry has been utilised on the left flank so far this season, and while he has not been successful up to this point, alongside the rest of the Blades players, this is his strongest position.

However, it is likely that Wilder will favour Gus Hamer on the left flank, and reinstate him to where he played in the 2024/25 season, which saw the Brazilian-born star named as the PFA Championship Player of the Season.

At the stage that Barry is in in his career, he requires consistent game time, but Wilder joining could easily derail that.
