Wrexham must beat Championship rivals to sign 13-goal star as ‘talks continue’, he’d be perfect signing

Wrexham are one of the most ambitious clubs in the EFL, and signing one of the most in-demand Championship stars would send a major statement of intent.

Wrexham made history with successive promotions last season, after reaching Championship level for the first time in the club’s 161-year history.

The Red Dragons have been linked with a host of high-profile transfer targets so far in the summer window, and Wrexham smashed their transfer record with the recent £4m signing of Liberato Cacace.

This week, Wrexham hope to beat Boro for Alfie Jones as the defender nears a Hull City exit, and Wrexham are “in talks” to sign Ajax’s Sivert Mannsverk ahead of Blackburn Rovers.

Wrexham signed Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle to boost their goalscoring ranks, and now the club have an opportunity to snap up one of the second tier’s best forwards, for free.

Wrexham must sign Josh Windass after Sheffield Wednesday exit

Wrexham’s Championship rivals, Sheffield Wednesday, have been enduring financial turmoil throughout the summer, which has led to several high-profile departures from Hillsborough.

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed this week that Danny Rohl will leave Sheffield Wednesday in the coming days, and the departures do not stop there.

Josh Windass and Michael Smith left Sheffield Wednesday this week, after the duo’s current Owls contracts were “terminated by mutual consent”.

As a result, Wrexham must capitalise on Windass’ Owls exit, and ensure that a move materialises as “talks continue” between the Red Dragons and the former Rangers frontman, who scored 13 goals and notched five assists for Wednesday last season.

Team Talk reporter Darren Witcoop said on X: “Talks to continue between Josh Windass and Wrexham over a free transfer deal after leaving Sheffield Wednesday.

“Other Championship clubs also showing interest in the forward so deal not cut and dry.”

Owls skipper Barry Bannan said farewell to Windass with a heartfelt message, and the Englishman’s absence at Sheffield Wednesday will be sorely felt, after he scored 53 goals and notched 22 assists in 182 Owls appearances.

When analysing Windass’ goalscoring record compared to the Wrexham squad from last season’s second-place finish in League One, it’s clear why the Red Dragons must beat their league rivals to his signature.

Josh Windass would be perfect signing for Phil Parkinson at Wrexham

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson predominantly sets his Red Dragons side up in a 3-5-2 formation, with previous record signing Sam Smith leading the line, and Elliot Lee playing in the number ten role just behind him.

Windass is versatile enough to play in a number of forward roles, but shone last season for the Owls in the same position as Lee, which saw Windass enjoy one of his seasons to date in front of goal when operating behind fellow departee Smith.

When analysing Windass’ goals and assists record last season against Lee’s for Wrexham, it’s evident that the former Rangers forward would be a significant upgrade for Parkinson’s number ten role.

Hardie and Smith will be licking their lips at the thought of lining up alongside Windass, and Wrexham must make sure those talks are successful, given the calibre of player they could acquire on a free transfer, the opportunity is simply too good to pass up on.
