Wrexham may beat Blackburn Rovers to sign ‘really good’ Ajax ace after Championship loan last season

Wrexham are flexing their financial muscles so far in the summer transfer window since their promotion to the Championship, with a top flight star the Red Dragons’ next target.

Wrexham made history with successive promotions last season, after joining Birmingham City in achieving promotion from League One.

So far in the summer transfer window, head coach Phil Parkinson and the Red Dragons’ recruitment team have been busy getting the squad up to Championship level.

Wrexham signed Ryan Hardie from relegated Plymouth Argyle earlier in the summer, and have since signed veteran goalkeeper Danny Ward from Leicester City.

Wrexham will break their transfer record with the imminent £4m signing of New Zealand international Liberato Cacace, who will jump to number one in Wrexham’s most expensive signings list.

Now, Wrexham are poised to beat second tier rivals Blackburn Rovers to an Ajax starlet in another major transfer coup.

Wrexham ‘in talks’ to sign Ajax’s Sivert Mannsverk ahead of Blackburn Rovers

Wrexham are continuing to flex their financial muscles in the second tier ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

On Friday, reports emerged that Wrexham could beat Middlesbrough to sign Alfie Jones from Hull City, with the Red Dragons hoping to steal a march on Boro and sign the Tigers ace for £3m.

Aside from Jones and Cacace, Wrexham are now reportedly “in talks” to sign Ajax midfielder Sivert Mannsverk, who spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Cardiff City during the Bluebirds’ ill-fated relegation to League One.

Football journalist Pete O’Rourke said on X: “Understand Wrexham are in talks to sign Ajax defensive midfielder Sivert Mannsverk. The Norwegian spent the second half of last season on loan at Cardiff.”

The Norwegian played 14 games for Cardiff in the Championship last term, registering one assist, but still managed to impress Cardiff skipper Joe Ralls.

Via Wales Online, Ralls said of Mannsverk: “He has settled in well, he is Norwegian, so he has got Jesper (Daland) to bounce off, settles him in nice and quickly,

“He looks a really good, technical player. I’m really excited to play with him more, and he’s got a lot more to show in a Cardiff shirt. In the six or the eight, he can do a good job for us.”

Blackburn showed interest in Mannsverk earlier in July, but now it appears the Red Dragons could beat Valerien Ismael’s side to his signature, and the Ajax outcast has a big point to prove next season.

Sivert Mannsverk has point to prove at Wrexham after Ajax and Cardiff City spells

Cardiff were relegated to League One last season, with interim manager Aaron Ramsey overseeing the Bluebirds’ unfortunate demise.

Mannsverk made 14 league appearances since he arrived at Cardiff in January, but failed to help guide the Bluebirds to safety, in a chance to showcase to the Dutch giants why they shelled out a £5m fee to Molde for his signature just 18 months ago.

The Norwegian could not ask for a better opportunity to showcase his best football than the Wrexham project right now.

After failing to make an impact with the Eredivisie giants and also failing to help save Cardiff from relegation to the third tier, the onus is on Mannsverk to give a more positive account at the Racecourse Ground if the talks materialise.
