Sheffield Wednesday exploring the free agent market as former promotion hero trains with the club

Sheffield Wednesday could keep a close eye on the free agent market following the conclusion of the summer transfer window, but will have to play ball with the EFL amid their ongoing restrictions.

It has been a tumultuous summer in S6, which has seen Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership of Sheffield Wednesday hit a new low.

The Owls have been plagued with issues, whether it be the untimely departure of Danny Rohl from the club or the mass exodus of first-team players, which are just two of a catalogue of errors overseen by Chansiri.

Sheffield Wednesday’s woes spilled into the summer window and affected their recruitment process, with the Owls only being able to bring in two players in the form of emergency goalkeeper Ethan Horvath and Man United defender Harry Amass.

Henrik Pedersen’s side have been significantly depleted in the last couple of months, and that could lead to the Dane keeping an eye on the free transfer market.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to ‘keep at it’ in the hunt for free agents

As per information from our chief football correspondent, Graeme Bailey, EFL Analysis understands that Sheffield Wednesday are keen to delve into the free agent market, but the club will have to see ‘what the EFL will let them do’.

Bailey said: “Of course, they are going to keep at it. There are a few they are looking at.

“Jack Hunt has been training with them; they might try and bring him back.

“But obviously, they did try for a few on deadline day.

“I’m surprised they didn’t get a couple more. Like with Amass, what United are doing, they obviously have the promise of regular football. So I’m surprised they didn’t get a couple more in to be honest.

“So it’s a blow, but now they are investigating the free agent market and seeing what the EFL will let them do.”

Jack Hunt has been training with Sheffield Wednesday since early August, and it is likely that Henrik Pedersen would be keen to bring him back to the club if he were offered the opportunity.

Henrik Pedersen has a glaring issue that free agents could solve

Across the pitch, Sheffield Wednesday are lacking in squad depth, with Henrik Pedersen having to turn to the Owls youngsters to bulk up his team.

While Pedersen does not have a wealth of options in any position, there are particular concerns at centre-back.

The long-term injury sustained by Di’Shon Bernard looks set to keep him out of action for some time, leaving the only natural senior centre-back options available to Pedersen as Dominic Iorfa and Gabriel Otegbayo.

Sheffield Wednesday are in need of major help from the EFL if they are to have a chance this season.
