Charlton still ‘looking’ at Thierry Small replacement who handed transfer blow to Nathan Jones

Charlton are yet to conclude their summer transfer window business following their promotion back into the Championship.

The Addicks have had a strong, unbeaten start to the campaign after surprising their second-tier rivals by signing an impressive blend of League One standouts including Reading’s Harvey Knibbs and players with Premier League experience.

However, one area of Nathan Jones’s side that still needs strengthening is right back or right wing back. That position was occupied by Thierry Small, who left for Preston North End at the start of the window. Kayne Ramsay is doing a fine job at right back, with new signing Rob Apter operating on the wing for the Addicks, but an injury to either could spell trouble.

After missing out on Lewis Miller to Blackburn Rovers this summer, the south Londoners had a loan bid for J1 League star Shinnosuke Fukuda rejected. But EFL Analysis understands Charlton’s pursuit of the Kyoto Sanga ace isn’t totally over.

Charlton still in pursuit of Shinnosuke Fukuda

Last month, the Daily Mail reported Charlton had made an approach to sign Fukuda, who is out of contract this upcoming January, on loan with an option to buy.

However, Kyoto Sanga are believed to prefer a full sale of their player this summer.

News on the Japanese right-wing back had gone quiet, with Jones renowned for not being keen on answering questions on ongoing transfer pursuits in his press conferences.

However, EFL Analysis football correspondent Graeme Bailey understands the Addicks are still ‘looking’ at the Kyoto star, who reportedly needs to be playing regularly in Europe to push for selection ahead of Japan’s World Cup campaign.

“He’s literally out of contract in less than six months, that’s the thing,” Bailey said. “So, unless Kyoto drops their valuation or forgo the release clause, I think it’s possible Charlton will just wait until January and get him for nothing then.

“It is possible before deadline day, and Charlton are looking, but Kyoto needs to change their mind first.”

Wolves player one alternative Addicks explored

After reports of the failed bid for Fukuda, it emerged that Charlton were in talks to sign Wolves youngster Dexter Lembikisa.

The 21-year-old plays with Addicks players Tyreece Campbell, Karoy Anderson and Kaheim Dixon for the Jamaica national team and was on trial at The Valley during the club’s pre-season fixtures. However, there has been no public update on the former Barnsley loanee.

A recent broadcast Q&A with members of Charlton’s board revealed that the club are keener to reach into its star-studded academy rather than fork out on loans for young Premier League stars.

19-year-old Henry Rylah – who played at wing back against Dartford in pre-season – and Ibrahim Fullah are among the Sparrows Lane products to be pushing into the first team. It’s likely the Addicks will still make one or two additions before the window slams shut, though.
