Middlesbrough legend is keen on replacing Ruben Selles as Hull City manager

Hull City have joined several other Championship clubs in searching for a new manager after dismissing Ruben Selles, and EFL Analysis understands that a Middlesbrough legend has approached the club regarding the vacancy.

Hull City fans were in disbelief when it was revealed that owner Acun Ilicali wanted to sack Ruben Selles following the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign.

The 41-year-old dragged Hull to Championship safety with a point against Portsmouth on the final day, surviving ahead of Luton Town on goal difference.

Unfortunately, Ilicali wasn’t impressed with City’s form during the business end of the season, winning just two of their final nine games.

That meant Hull dismissed Selles as manager on Thursday, and are now on the lookout for their fourth permanent manager in the space of a year.

George Boateng has approached Hull City to replace Ruben Selles

When the Tigers were considering relieving Selles of his duties, it emerged that former West Brom boss Tony Mowbray was an option for Hull.

Those rumours were instantly shut down, though, with Hull now moving on to other managerial candidates to replace the Spaniard.

In an EFL Analysis exclusive, we understand that Middlesbrough legend and former City midfielder George Boateng is keen on the vacant managerial role.

Boateng enjoyed a glittering career in England, making over 400 appearances for the likes of Coventry City, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Hull.

After hanging up his boots in 2013, Boateng worked on his coaching badges and was most recently first-team coach at Coventry before Frank Lampard arrived.

The 49-year-old was also a part of Ghana’s coaching setup during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and we understand that he’s been in contention for several EFL jobs in recent months, with Hull now emerging as a possibility for the Ghanaian.

Boateng is already aware of one Hull City problem

Should Ilicali make the shock appointment of Boateng, the former midfielder already knows one ‘problem’ that needs fixing in the summer transfer window.

“Hull City’s problem of the season is not being clinical enough. It was a brilliant tackle from Steven Alzate, he wins it, they pick up the ball with Lincoln and this is unbelievable. How Kasey Palmer could not finish this is beyond me. He has two opportunities, really,” Boateng said when assessing Kasey Palmer’s miss against Coventry in April.

Goals were a massive problem for Hull throughout 2024/25, scoring the fewest in the division and netting just twice from open play in their final nine matches. It will now be down to the next manager to resolve that issue.
