Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham job is at stake as worrying stats emerge despite £33m spending

Wrexham are one of the Championship’s biggest summer spenders, but that has not led to early-season results.

Following their promotion from League One last season, Wrexham shelled out over £30m in the summer transfer window.

The likes of Nathan Broadhead joined Wrexham for £7m from Ipswich Town, Ben Sheaf left Coventry City for the Red Dragons and former Norwich City loanee Callum Doyle was signed by Wrexham from Manchester City.

Unfortunately for Phil Parkinson, the summer spending spree of Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac has not seen Wrexham make a blockbuster start to the season.

Wrexham have enjoyed just one win from their opening five games, and two glaring causes of concern for the Welsh giants place pressure on Parkinson.

Wrexham have been poor in defence and attack under Phil Parkinson

The Wrexham Insider report that the Red Dragons owners are considering Parkinson’s future with the club after a lacklustre start to life in the Championship under his tutelage.

Understandably so, after a monumental summer outlay that has resulted in just four points from the first 15 on offer this season.

At the weekend, QPR beat Wrexham 3-1, with summer signing Conor Coady suffering a torrid time against QPR’s £5m striker Richard Kone.

Following their latest defeat, worrying stats surrounding the Dragons have emerged, which perfectly illustrate their issues under Parkinson so far this season.

As pointed out by the Second Tier podcast on X, no Championship side has created (18) or missed (12) more big chances than Wrexham this season.

In addition, Wrexham and Norwich City share a worrying trend this season, which highlights that Parkinson’s side are top of the Championship for xG (expected goals) conceded thus far.

In layman’s terms, Parkinson’s side are not clinical enough, nor are they solid in their defensive structure to mitigate their profligacy in front of goal.

Parkinson’s poor record as a Championship-level manager was always going to be a concern, but considering Wrexham’s run of games with his future under the microscope, another second tier sacking could be on the cards.

Phil Parkinson faces difficult run of fixtures for Wrexham

Premier League promotion is the aim for Reynolds and co at Wrexham, and the jury is certainly out as to whether Parkinson is the man to guide the Dragons to the top flight.

As the Wrexham hierarchy weigh up the former Sunderland boss’ future, it is difficult to see where the much-needed points are going to come from within their next four fixtures.

Wrexham face Norwich this weekend, which will be a difficult test against Liam Manning’s side, especially considering that in-form striker Josh Sargent is still searching for his 50th Championship goal.

Following the Canaries trip is the visit of Derby County, who took three points from promotion-hopefuls West Brom at the weekend.

A midweek trip to recently relegated Leicester City comes before the home clash against arch-rivals Birmingham City, who also spent big on signings this summer following their third tier title win at Wrexham’s expense.

As the aforementioned stats showcase, Parkinson must improve Wrexham’s attacking output and defensive prospects before the Dragons hierarchy call time on his tenure.
