It was a pretty quiet transfer deadline day for Coventry City, which mirrored their behaviour for much of the window, actually, and fans can’t work out if that’s a good thing or not.
After Frank Lampard guided Coventry City to the play-offs last season, many had hoped and expected that this would be the foundation for a massive promotion push in 2025/26.
On the pitch, the Sky Blues have started the season brilliantly, with two massive wins and two draws leaving them in the top five as we head into the international break.
There’s no denying that Coventry have sent warnings to their rivals when it comes to their performances. However, in the transfer market, it’s been far more underwhelming.

What Coventry City fans are saying about summer transfer window
Just a week ago, Lampard said he needed a strong squad to compete at the top of the league. However, when you look at the deals completed on deadline day, Coventry signed just one player: Luke Woolfenden.
Taking to Twitter/X to discuss the business carried out by their club, many Coventry fans were disappointed and think it leaves the Sky Blues lagging behind their competitors.
One fan said, “No depth whatsoever, very poor from Frank Lampard, Dean Austin and Doug King.”
Another added: “Thing is we lose our best players next season, so we’re back to square one again. I accepted today we’re just a club that will never really ‘go for it’. The board’s ambition doesn’t align with the fans. King has done wonders for us but he lacks ambition on the pitch. Change needed.”
A third wrote: “Austin needs to go, every season this happens. Not good enough.”
However, there are plenty of fans who disagree, highlighting the fact King bought the CBS Arena this summer as a key factor and a necessary sacrifice when it comes to the club’s transfer strategy.
One fan wrote: “Some of the comments I’m seeing about this window – ‘disastrous, appalling, catastrophic’. I would’ve taken ZERO activity and a bottom half finish this season if the trade-off was to buy the CBS. Doug’s just spent circa £40m to secure our future.”
Another added, “Cov fans… we literally just bought a stadium, calm down,” while a third said, “I think it’s now obvious the stadium has reduced Frank’s budget or we missed out on a load of targets.”

Did Coventry City do enough this summer?
When you look at the ins and outs at Coventry City this summer, the Sky Blues have added Carl Rushworth, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Miguel Angel Brau, and of course, Luke Woolfenden to really bolster Lampard’s defensive options.
However, there has been a distinct lack of reinforcements for the Coventry attack. Does that matter, though?
With the likes of Jack Rudoni, Haji Wright, Victor Torp, and Ephron Mason-Clark, Coventry have firepower and creativity already. Indeed, keeping Rudoni and Wright, after months of speculation, was just as big a deal as bringing in new players.
Coventry also held on to Bobby Thomas (who was linked to Sheffield United) and Milan van Ewijk, whose move to Germany fell through. To be honest, Ben Sheaf’s move to Wrexham was the only blow for Coventry this summer.
With hardly any major departures at all, and a few shrewd if unremarkable signings added, the Coventry City squad is certainly better than it was last season. If Lampard can keep them ticking and maintain the momentum he’s enjoyed since arriving at the CBS Arena, Coventry will be a force to be reckoned with this year.
