Matt Bloomfield was seething after Luton Town’s relegation, he’ll be even angrier after latest development

There’s less than two months to go until the EFL is back, and for Luton Town this season is all about bouncing back.

It was a dismal end to 2024/25, and Matt Bloomfield fumed after the Hatters were relegated on the final day of the campaign following a 5-3 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

There are doubts over Thelo Aasgaard’s future at Kenilworth Road with the Bedfordshire outfit now in League One, just two years after they started the 2023/24 season in the Premier League. Now, questions will be asked about who stays and who goes from the squad.

Teden Mengi looks likely to leave, although Luton are interested in full-back Owen Dodgson. However, there is one January target that Bloomfield has no chance of signing this summer.

Luton Town have no chance of signing Richard Kone this summer

EFL Analysis exclusively revealed on Tuesday that Birmingham City and Middlesbrough are targeting Richard Kone after an excellent campaign with Wycombe Wanderers.

However, throughout the January transfer window, Luton showed an interest in the 21-year-old striker and even submitted bids for him.

As per Sky Sports, the Hatters were willing spend £7m on the forward as they looked to reunite Bloomfield with Kone after an incredible first half of the season at Adams Park.

But relegation to League One has all but killed off their chances of signing the Ivorian, and their relegation has become even costlier than it already was – much to the frustration of their manager.

Carlton Morris must have a big season

Jay Stansfield wants a new big-money signing to join Birmingham City this summer, and Kone could be the perfect player to partner him.

Yet this leaves Luton in a sticky position, and Carlton Morris has to pull up his socks and take on the responsibility of leading the line for the Buckinghamshire club.

He struggled massively in the Championship after a strong Premier League campaign, and Morris was extremely honest about his and the rest of the team’s performances in the second tier in 2024/25.

But the ex-Barnsley man can ill-afford to rest on his laurels in League One. If he does stick around, Bloomfield will need to see more from him and without a chance of bringing in Kone, Luton must find their talisman – whether they’re already at the club or not.
