Once again, there were big twists and turns throughout the second tier this weekend, and you can keep up with them all in our round-up from the Championship today.

With another full round of fixtures complete, we’ve seen the fight for the Championship title change course again as Burnley, Sheffield United, and Leeds United continue to trade places.

Two of those teams will go up automatically, while the other will have to scrap it out in the play-offs, and the race for the top six spots now looks completely different as we head into the final six games of the season.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, the Championship relegation battle is wide open, with more teams getting dragged into that particular dogfight.

And, there’s even been intense drama off the pitch, as the situation at Sheffield Wednesday reaches breaking point after Dejphon Chansiri’s latest blunder.

Championship title race takes stunning twists as Burnley sneak ahead

The top of the Championship table looks completely different after this weekend’s games, with Scott Parker’s Burnley side now sitting at the summit after a 2-1 win away at Coventry City.

Burnley got a little lucky with their winner on the day, with a scrappy goal from Jaidon Anthony proving to be the difference at the CBS Arena.

Coventry City 1-2 Burnley
Luton Town 1-1 Leeds United
Oxford United 1-0 Sheffield United

Meanwhile, Leeds continue to fall apart again this season, dropping points on the road to relegation-threatened Luton Town. The result there sees Daniel Farke’s men drop to third in the table.

As for Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United side, a 1-0 defeat to Oxford United saw the Blades looking blunt and showing signs of inconsistency.

One thing’s for sure, that clash between Burnley and Sheffield United later this month is going to be absolutely crucial now.

Middlesbrough and Bristol City replace Coventry and West Brom in play-off spots

The action got underway on Friday night, with two play-off contenders facing off at Ewood Park, but it was Middlesbrough who came out on top against a lacklustre Blackburn Rovers.

Michael Carrick’s side triumphed 2-0 there, with Jonny Howson the standout performer for Boro and Kelechi Iheanacho proving his worth, too.

The win has lifted the Teessiders up to fifth in the table now, and it’s all thanks to a win for another side from the North East, with Sunderland defeating West Brom at the Hawthorns on Saturday lunchtime.

Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Middlesbrough
West Brom 0-1 Sunderland
Bristol City 2-1 Watford

A goal from Trai Hume was enough to put a serious dent in the Baggies’ pursuit of a top-six finish, and spoil Tony Mowbray’s reunion with the Black Cats.

After Coventry’s defeat presented an opportunity, it is Bristol City who duly obliged and took up their spot in the play-off places this weekend.

Liam Manning’s side prevailed 2-1 at home to Watford, and remain the dark horses in this promotion race.

Danny Rohl’s had enough of Sheffield Wednesday situation

Off the pitch, things have been going from bad to worse for Sheffield Wednesday this week. The Owls failed to pay their players for March, with chairman Dejphon Chansiri to blame.

Wednesday now face a multitude of punishments, including a fine, a three-window transfer embargo, and with it, a likely points deduction for next season.

Fans are desperate for Chansiri to resolve the matter and sell the club, but expert opinion tells us it would take a ‘miracle’ for the club to change hands now.

To make matters worse, the Owls fell to a last minute defeat at home to Hull City on Saturday. The result leaves Wednesday’s faint play-off hopes dead in the water, and manager Danny Rohl even admitted the team “is not ready” for that next step anyway (per The Star).

With Rohl himself increasingly likely to leave, we could be about to see a real implosion in S6 in the coming months if this issue is not resolved.

Derby County take one step backwards in relegation battle

Speaking of implosions, Derby County shot themselves in the foot this weekend by falling to defeat against Swansea City.

The Rams took a giant step towards a great escape in midweek by beating Preston North End and climbing out of the relegation zone. They’re still above water, just, but it is only goal difference separating John Eustace’s men from Cardiff City now.

Derby’s four-game winning streak is now over, but there is solace in the fact that results this weekend leave us with a fascinating six-team tussle for survival in the Championship today.

Plymouth won at home to Norwich to rekindle their own hopes of a miraculous recovery, while Luton got that valuable point against Leeds.

Meanwhile, Cardiff and Stoke also put another point on the board with their own draws, while Hull put some distance between themselves and the drop zone by beating Wednesday.

With six games to go, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will still be in this division come next season.
