Championship transfer round-up: Wrexham’s Patrick Bamford issue, Birmingham want wingers, Blades close to signing

The first part of the summer window is about to come to a close tomorrow. So, we’ve pulled together a comprehensive Championship transfer round-up featuring the big stories from the weekend.

Thanks to the Club World Cup the EFL has a very different summer transfer window this year.

Clubs have had a brief window from June 1st to June 10th to conduct early business. Then, a longer, second window opens again on June 16th through to the 1st of September.

We’ve already seen lots of action within the Championship. For a start, Watford are completing plenty of deals, and Preston North End are doing good business, too.

But, before any more deals are confirmed, it’s time to ride the rumour mill and see what’s going on with our new Championship transfer round-up.

Patrick Bamford may be reluctant to make Championship switch

It seems like Wrexham have been linked with pretty much every Premier League free agent on the market so far, with Patrick Bamford a key name among those rumours.

However, we exclusively revealed this week that Bamford may well stay at Leeds United and try to prove himself in the Premier League one last time.

That’s not stopping Wrexham, though. The Red Dragons are chasing Lewis Travis, too, and a £2m move for the Blackburn captain would be a real signal of intent from Phil Parkinson’s side.

Birmingham City linked with multiple wingers

It’s no secret that Birmingham City want a new winger or two this summer. Naturally, then, they’re being linked with plenty of wide players, with Jesurun Rak-Sakyi the latest connection for the Blues.

It is thought Crystal Palace are open to letting the youngster leave this summer, but Sheffield United are also keen to keep him after a successful loan spell in 2024/25.

Meanwhile, the Blues have also been linked with a move for former player Demarai Gray, who is currently playing for Al-Ettifaq. Dutchman Sontje Hansen is a new name on Birmingham’s radar, and would be a much cheaper option.

Birmingham did get a deal over the line recently, though, with Brighton goalkeeper James Beadle arriving on a season-long loan. We’re sure that’ll be the first of many confirmed deals we discuss in each Championship transfer round-up to come.

Sheffield United close in on Jimmy Dunne

Sheffield United might not win the race for Rak-Sakyi, but we exclusively revealed that the Blades are very close to agreeing terms with Jimmy Dunne, who will be a free agent after leaving QPR this summer.

Chris Wilder has also been pushing Sunderland in the race to snap up Chris Mepham, but Burnley may now trump them both to the signature of the Bournemouth man.

One bit of news Blades fans won’t like is that star goalkeeper Michael Cooper is wanted by Everton. However, whether the United man would be happy playing second fiddle to Jordan Pickford is another matter.

Portsmouth, Derby County, and Leicester City eye first deals of the window

We complete our Championship transfer round-up with a little look at some other clubs in the second tier who don’t always get our attention.

First of all, Jamal Lowe is being pursued by Portsmouth, who want a reunion with the Sheffield Wednesday striker. Blackburn and Oxford United are also keen.

Meanwhile, Derby County are close to signing Kamil Conteh from Bristol Rovers. The likes of Plymouth, Millwall, Oxford, and Peterborough have all looked at the midfielder this year.

And, finally, Leicester City have approached Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. They have offered the former Arsenal and Liverpool man a contract, and Besiktas are thought to be willing to move him on.
